Every nesting season, female sea turtles haul themselves up the sand at Playa Grande and Playa Cabuyal to lay a clutch of eggs, then disappear back into the surf, leaving that nest to face the next two months completely alone. Most years it's leatherbacks and olive ridleys we see most often, with greens showing up as well, and every so often, rarely, a hawksbill. Whichever species she is, she does the same thing: she digs, she lays, she covers the nest, and she leaves. Everything that happens after that is up to the beach, and to us.

Where a female chooses to lay matters enormously. A nest tucked in the shade near the treeline develops differently than one out in open sun; a clutch near the mangroves or tangled among rocky outcrops faces different threats than one on a clean stretch of open sand. Poachers, ghost crabs, feral dogs, and eroding tide lines all factor in too. Our field team walks these beaches every night of the season, and where a nest is at real risk, they act: relocating it to the protected hatchery, or in most cases, monitoring it closely right where it was laid.

In situ, in place, is always our first choice. A nest left where the mother buried it develops the way nature intended, and our team monitors it nightly and conducts a full inventory after it hatches to track how it did. Relocation to the hatchery is reserved for nests facing real, specific threats: tidal flooding, heavy poaching pressure, and other risks that a nest simply can't survive on its own.

Protect A Nest lets you fund that work directly, in whichever form a given nest needs. This program is the core of what we do here. Without it, there is no data, no protection, and far fewer hatchlings reaching the water. $15,000 is what we need to maintain a full season of our hatchery and monitoring work, and we need your help to keep it going.

Full Nesting Journey Champion, $500

This gift is the full arc for a hatchling, egg to ocean. Your support covers a nest's entire journey, whether that's careful relocation to the hatchery when a nest needs that extra layer of protection, or nightly monitoring in situ. Every base is covered, and so is every story: you'll receive all the updates our beach has to offer this year, from what happens inside the hatchery to what our team sees monitoring those wild nests. Full protection for a nest, wherever it's laid, and the full story, for you. You'll also have the option to put your name on the outside of our hatchery, in recognition of your support this season.

Hatchery Nest Protector, $300

Full nest protection

This gift funds the relocation of one clutch to our hatchery and protects it through the entire incubation period, an average of about 60 days. Inside the hatchery, that nest is shielded from poachers and predators, and our team tracks its progress until every hatchling that can make it, does. It also supports the research, temperature monitoring, and security that keep our hatchery running. You'll get every update that comes out of the hatchery this season, from the relocation of our first leatherback nest, to the odd wild story our team always seems to bring back. You'll also have the option to put your name on the outside of our hatchery, in recognition of your support this season.

Hatchery Nest Ally, $100

Partial nest protection

This is a shared sponsorship of hatchery protection. Join a themed team, or "grupo," alongside two other allies, and together your group's gift funds a nest's journey through the hatchery, from relocation through incubation to release. Once your grupo of three comes together, you'll receive all the ups and downs of that nest's season, the same stories a full protector gets. So round up your team, and get those stories together. Each grupo is named for a different piece of Costa Rica, one more thread connecting you to this beach. You'll also have the option to put your grupo's name on the outside of our hatchery, in recognition of your support this season.

Wild Nest Protector, $75

Extra care for our in situ nests

This gift protects a nest that stays right where the mother laid it, our preferred method whenever a nest can handle it. Wild nests still require real work: our team marks the location, monitors it closely through incubation, and returns for a full inventory once incubation ends. It's a lighter-impact method than relocation, but it carries more risk. There's no hatchery wall between that clutch and the beach, only our team's nightly presence and their end-of-incubation inventory. The updates from these nests will be fewer and rawer, a closer look at what a sea turtle nest looks like with almost no human hand in it.

Nesting Season Supporter, $50

Core support for those who want the widest impact

This gift fuels the season itself: the nightly beach patrols, the data collection, the fuel and headlamps and hands that make every other nest on this list possible. This is what keeps our team on the sand every single night from October through March. At the end of the season, you'll receive our full report, so you can see just how many hatchlings your support helped reach the sea.

Protect A Nest is a symbolic sponsorship, not a claim on a specific, identifiable nest. Because our field stations operate inside Las Baulas National Marine Park, no individual or organization can hold implied ownership over any part of the park, including a nest laid beneath the sand. Your gift is a donation to TLT's nesting season conservation work as a whole. What you'll receive: seasonal updates from the field via direct email, hatchery photos, a name plaque at our Playa Grande field station hatchery if you choose, and milestone emails throughout the season (first nests, interesting research findings, and hatchling releases, etc). You're joining a virtual village of nest protectors making the season possible, not adopting one nest. 5% of cumulative donations of this campaign go to Las Baulas National Marine Park. Cada temporada de anidación, las tortugas marinas hembras se arrastran por la arena de Playa Grande y Playa Cabuyal para poner un nido de huevos, y luego desaparecen de vuelta al mar, dejando ese nido para enfrentar solo los próximos dos meses. La mayoría de los años son las baulas y las loras las que vemos con más frecuencia, con algunas verdes también, y de vez en cuando, aunque poco común, una carey. Sin importar la especie, cada hembra hace lo mismo: cava, pone sus huevos, cubre el nido, y se va. Todo lo que pasa después depende de la playa, y de nosotros.

Dónde elige poner sus huevos una hembra importa muchísimo. Un nido escondido en la sombra cerca de la línea de árboles se desarrolla diferente a uno bajo el sol abierto; una nidada cerca de los manglares o entre afloramientos rocosos enfrenta amenazas distintas a una en un tramo limpio de arena abierta. Los saqueadores, los cangrejos fantasma, los perros ferales, y la erosión de la marea también influyen. Nuestro equipo de campo camina estas playas cada noche de la temporada, y donde un nido está en verdadero riesgo, actúan: reubicándolo al vivero protegido, o en la mayoría de los casos, monitoreándolo de cerca justo donde fue puesto.

In situ, es decir "en su lugar", siempre es nuestra primera opción. Un nido dejado donde la madre lo enterró se desarrolla como la naturaleza lo diseñó, y nuestro equipo lo monitorea cada noche y hace un inventario completo después de que eclosiona para dar seguimiento a cómo le fue. La reubicación al vivero se reserva para nidos que enfrentan amenazas reales y específicas: inundación por marea, fuerte presión de saqueo, y otros riesgos que un nido simplemente no podría sobrevivir por sí solo.

'Protect A Nest' te permite financiar ese trabajo directamente, en la forma que cada nido lo necesite. Este programa es el corazón de lo que hacemos aquí. Este es un patrocinio compartido de la protección en nuestro vivero. Uniéndote a un equipo temático, o "grupo," junto con otros dos aliados, el regalo de tu grupo ayuda a financiar el recorrido de un nido por el vivero, desde la reubicación hasta la incubación y la liberación. Cuando tu grupo de tres se completa, reciben todas las historias, altas y bajas, de la temporada de ese nido, las mismas que recibe un protector completo. Así que organizá tu equipo y consigan esas historias juntos. Cada grupo lleva el nombre de una parte distinta de Costa Rica, un hilo más que te conecta con esta playa. Protector de Nido Silvestre, $75

Cuidado extra para nuestros nidos in situ

Este regalo protege un nido que se queda justo donde la madre lo puso, nuestro método preferido siempre que un nido lo permita. Los nidos silvestres igual requieren trabajo real: nuestro equipo marca la ubicación, lo monitorea de cerca durante la incubación, y regresa para hacer un inventario completo cuando termina la incubación. Es un método de menor impacto que la reubicación, pero conlleva más riesgo. No hay una pared de vivero entre esa nidada y la playa, solo la presencia nocturna de nuestro equipo y su inventario al final de la incubación. Las actualizaciones de estos nidos van a ser menos frecuentes y más crudas, una mirada más cercana a lo que es un nido de tortuga marina con casi ninguna intervención humana.

Este regalo impulsa la temporada en sí misma: las patrullas nocturnas en la playa, la recolección de datos, la gasolina, las linternas, y las manos que hacen posible cada nido de esta lista. Esto es lo que mantiene a nuestro equipo en la arena cada noche, de octubre a marzo. Al final de la temporada, vas a recibir nuestro informe completo, para que veás cuántas crías en total tu apoyo ayudó a llevar al mar.

Protect A Nest es un padrinazgo simbólico, no una reclamación sobre un nido específico e identificable. Debido a que nuestras estaciones de campo operan dentro del Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas, ningún individuo u organización puede tener propiedad implícita sobre ninguna parte del parque, incluyendo un nido enterrado bajo la arena. Tu donación apoya el trabajo de conservación de TLT durante toda la temporada de anidación en su conjunto. Lo que vas a recibir: actualizaciones desde el campo durante la temporada por correo directo, fotos del vivero, una placa con tu nombre en el vivero de nuestra estación de campo en Playa Grande si así lo deseás, y correos con hitos importantes a lo largo de la temporada (primeros nidos, hallazgos interesantes de investigación, liberación de tortuguitas, entre otros).
