One year ago, Guardian quietly began an entirely new program in Punta Hermosa, Peru, just south of Lima.

The program was led by our friend Herbert Fiedler, who had already built a jiu jitsu academy in Punta Hermosa and felt deeply aligned with Guardian’s mission after seeing our work in Máncora. Rather than waiting for the “right time,” Herbert chose to act.

Within weeks, Herbert began visiting local schools and communities in a far more underserved area just outside of town. He was joined by mentors and friends of the program, including world-class Olympian surfers Miguel and Tomas Tudela and wildlife activist Pierre Cateriano. Together, they went classroom to classroom sharing what jiu jitsu can offer beyond the mat: structure, mentorship, and consistency. Every student was invited to apply for a chance to train.

The response was overwhelming. More than 500 kids applied to be part of this new Guardian program.

For those who haven’t seen Punta Hermosa in person, it reflects a reality common in many parts of Peru. Just minutes from areas of relative comfort are communities stretching east into the desert, where many families lack basic infrastructure, including running water.

Today, 27 teens are fully sponsored through this program. Many travel long distances to train, some paying the equivalent of just 30 cents to make it to the academy. Despite these challenges, they show up consistently, committed not only to jiu jitsu, but to the stability and direction it provides.
