Purification of the Heart

The heart is at the center of our relationship with Allah. When it is sound, faith, worship, character, and relationships flourish; when it becomes afflicted by spiritual disease, every dimension of our lives can be affected.

Drawing from Purification of the Heart, based on the classical poem of Imam al-Mawlud, this course examines the spiritual diseases that afflict the human heart, including pride, envy, ostentation, greed, heedlessness, anger, and other inner maladies.

Imam Hicham Hall will guide students in learning how to recognize these diseases within themselves, understand their spiritual consequences, and study the remedies prescribed through the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Islamic tradition of tazkiyah.

More than a study of abstract concepts, this course is an invitation to sincere self-examination: to better understand the state of our hearts and undertake the lifelong work of purifying them as we seek greater sincerity, sound character, and closeness to Allah.
