Story

It only takes one hand to count the number of all female / femme musical theatre writing teams that have been on Broadway...

...and to count the number of all female and BIPOC teams, you don't even need your hands.

Because there hasn't been a single one in the over 100 year history of Broadway. Yet.

Enter AZUL. Previously programmed at the 2020 National Music Theatre Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, NAMT 2021 Annual Festival of New Musicals, and the 2022 NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre, AZUL is a New Bilingual Musical, with a book by Melis Aker and Tatiana Pandiani and Music by Jacinta Clusellas.

In an epic world of magic realism, Blue Bird, an ambitious poet, leaves her homeland behind, seeking a better life in a new land. In present-day NYC, Rita, a composer, struggles to write her debut album about a motherland she has never known. AZUL weaves together these two distinct worlds to explore how memory and imagination shape immigrant identity. AZUL is a bilingual musical about loss, and what it means to step back in order to move forward.

Fresh off the heels of their 54 Below debut EP concert, starring Broadway's Katerina McCrimmon, Mandy Gonzalez, and Robin de Jesús, the team of AZUL is working to raise funds for an industry reading as soon as fall 2023, to attract partners to bring the show to full production.

Please consider a tax-deductible donation today to bring this important story to the stage. Any amount supports the future of this trailblazing new musical and the women behind it.

If you're interested in investing in AZUL or joining the producing team, please contact Ryan Duncan-Ayala at [email protected]

All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. AZUL's fundraising campaign is fiscally sponsored by the Latine Musical Theatre Lab.
