Director's Statement

My beautiful and amazing daughter Aubree has fueled my successful career as a Director and Actor. With several awards under my belt for telling stories for those who can’t tell them themselves, I am in a unique position where I get to tell the story of fathers whose hearts are constantly beating for their children, like me.

There are three main messages that I want to express in this short film. The first message is about how being a long-distance father affects my mental health. The second is how I juggle what's more important in each moment. Sacrificing family time over my career vs sacrificing my career over family life (presence vs present). Lastly, how I feel like an outsider when Aubree gravitates more to her mother and the women in her life than me.

I'll explore these themes with visual motifs and a cinema verite shooting style on 16mm because of the medium’s expressive qualities and timeless quality. Much used in foreign films, this shooting style focuses on emotions rather than plot.

This film is a minimalistic exercise that isn’t compelled by traditional narrative plot lines or structure but by themes. Themes of abandonment, loss, shame, and redemption. I believe shooting analog has a structure that best captures that feeling. It is a perfect match for our story.
