SAFI is planning a Rabies Day vaccination drive to vaccinate street dogs in Hyderabad. The estimated number of dogs to be vaccinated is 1000.

It only costs $3.00 to vaccinate one dog. This amount covers the vaccines and essential items like syringes, gloves, vet technicians, dog catchers, paint appliers, record keepers, vehicles, fuel costs, treats for luring dogs, and even salaries, chai, and lunch breaks for our dedicated team.

The Challenge:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “India is endemic for rabies”.

India bears a significant burden of human rabies deaths globally. According to recent estimates:

Approximately 20,000 people die from rabies in India annually
This accounts for 36% of global rabies deaths
Most victims are children under 15 years old

These statistics underscore the urgency of our mission.

Our Rabies Prevention Efforts:

As part of the #RabiesFreeIndia initiative, we're proud to announce our commitment to vaccinating 1,000 street dogs in Hyderabad. Rabies is 99% fatal and 100% preventable through vaccination.

We will also educate the community on what to do in case of a dog bite. By sterilizing and vaccinating dogs, we can reduce conflicts between humans and animals while empowering people to act swiftly if bitten.

The logistics of planning and implementing this camp is no small feat!

We plan to alert feeders, animal lovers, and residential owners to sign up. We recruit volunteers to assist.

Each of our two teams has at least one dog catcher, a vaccinator, a record keeper, and someone who applies paint to the dog once it is vaccinated, so we do not vaccinate the same dog twice. If the dog cannot be caught by a local feeder or using treats to bribe them, our trained catchers use their skills to trap them with a net.

The goal is to vaccinate at least 70% of the dogs in each area, which is the number needed to eradicate rabies. We record the number of dogs vaccinated per area, whether they are male or female, and whether they have been spayed/neutered.
