Our Story

In 2024, a routine genetic screening changed everything for the Wiener family. Terry and Adam were expecting their second child when doctors discovered Terry carries Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) — a rare, progressive neurological disease that, left undetected, can rob a child of their ability to walk, see, and speak.

They tested their son Theodore right away. He has it too. Theodore is four now — funny, curious, and absolutely full of life.

"The emotions came fast," says Adam. "Anger. Powerlessness. The particular sadness of knowing your beautiful child carries something he doesn't deserve."

That sadness became fuel. Adam and Terry founded Cure ALD to fund research aimed at stopping ALD before symptoms ever begin — and to give families like theirs a way to fight back. Find out more about their story.

What is ALD?

X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare, progressive neurological disease that affects 1 in 10,500 births in the United States. It damages the brain, spinal cord, and adrenal glands — and in its most devastating form, can cause rapid neurological decline in boys between the ages of 4 and 10, affecting their ability to walk, see, and speak.
