Recovery & Resiliency

A Six-Week Skills-Building Program for Alcohol & Substance Use Recovery

Recovery is an ongoing process of learning, growth, and healing. Developing healthy coping strategies, understanding emotional responses, and building resilience can help individuals navigate life's challenges while supporting long-term recovery.

Anam Cara Counseling's Recovery & Resiliency Program is a six-week, trauma-informed, equine-assisted learning group designed for adults in recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders.

The program explores the connection between trauma, stress, and substance use while helping participants strengthen coping skills, deepen self-awareness, and develop practical tools for continued healing and recovery.

Through neuroscience education, group discussions, and experiential learning with horses, participants will explore emotional regulation, stress management, healthy boundaries, supportive relationships, and ways to navigate challenges in recovery.

Why Horses?

Horses are highly perceptive animals that rely on their ability to read their surroundings, body language, and nonverbal cues. Their responses can offer insight into our emotions, behaviors, and the connection between what we feel internally and express externally.

For individuals in recovery, trauma and chronic stress can contribute to feeling disconnected from emotions and physical sensations. Working with horses offers opportunities to reconnect with those experiences, practice staying present, and develop greater self-awareness.

Positive interactions with horses engage the body's social bonding systems, including oxytocin, a hormone associated with trust, connection, and feelings of safety.

Through guided, ground-based experiences with Anam Cara's herd, participants can explore emotional regulation, healthy boundaries, trust, and resilience in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.

No previous horse experience is necessary. All activities take place on the ground; there is no horseback riding.
