Some voices won't stay buried.

This Halloween season, Continuum Vocal Ensemble invites you into Restless Spirits, a festive fall evening of spooky choral storytelling where spirits rise, witches whisper, and some voices refuse to stay buried.

From within a historic ballroom you'll encounter hauntings summoned from across the world and across the centuries. A witch's curse lifted straight out of a medieval Norse saga. A red rider on a pale horse, thundering across Iceland with a scythe in his hands. Bats — drawn not as monsters, but as small, translucent, almost tender things. And a piece featuring the words carved above the gates of Hell themselves: abandon all hope, you who enter here.

Then we throw the doors wide open because the evening also belongs to "This Is Halloween" from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and "Grim Grinning Ghosts" from Disney's Haunted Mansion, where, as any regular can tell you, the ghosts don't merely appear. They sing.

Voices will rise from the darkness. Some may be standing right next to you.

OUR SPOOKY SETTING - The Mahler Ballroom
The Mahler Ballroom was built in 1907 for Albert Mahler, a Viennese-born dancing master, and designed by Theodore Link, the same architect who gave St. Louis Union Station. For over a century, this room has existed for one purpose: gathering. Its mirrored walls have reflected a hundred years of candlelight, music, and celebration. Those mirrors, they say, hold on to what they've seen. If any room in St. Louis still hums with the voices of everyone who ever sang, danced, and laughed inside it, it's this one.

OUR ARTISTS

Led by Dr. John McDonald -- Director of Choir and Vocal Studies at Washington University -- Continuum Vocal Ensemble is comprised of trained vocal artists bringing the experience of transformative choral music to diverse audiences. Continuum's mission is to perform innovative choral music in unconventional settings -- from museums to industrial buildings to shared work spaces -- all over St. Louis.
