Join us this summer in supporting kinship families, those who step up to care for related children in moments of trauma. These "grandfamilies" or "relatives as parents" open their hearts and homes to grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, and children of family friends, often with little notice and limited information about the challenges ahead.

When a child enters a kinship home through the Department of Family and Protective Services, the home must meet strict safety regulations set by Texas Residential Child Care Licensing (RCCL). Grandfamilies are required to child-proof their homes with outlet covers and cabinet locks, install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, update pet vaccinations, secure swimming pools, and add safety features to trampolines. Additionally, they must lock up medications and weapons, and provide essentials like beds, car seats, diapers, and daycare. These initial adjustments can cost families over $500, and even more for those caring for sibling groups.

Many kinship families are unaware of these regulations and are caught off guard by the sudden expenses. While DFPS provides some funds and items, the support is not guaranteed and must go through a lengthy state purchasing process. Additionally, kinship families receive significantly less financial support ($346 per month per child) compared to licensed foster families ($812 per month per child).

This summer, the San Angelo Family Network aims to ease this burden by providing care packages with essential items and allowing families to request additional support based on their specific needs.
