This year, we have enjoyed celebrating the 50^th anniversary of the Bay Area Women’s Center (BAWC). We have spent much time reflecting on the conception of a center for survivors of violence to the current day agency providing 24/7 care and support. Many volunteers, staff, survivors, and donors have shaped our services, and we are grateful for the contributions of each person over the years.

Reflection is something Melanie* is grateful for. Melanie is a survivor who utilized our services five years ago, and she recently reconnected with us.

“I never thought my kids and I would see the day where we lived happy, healthy, and safe in our own home, unafraid of going to sleep at night. BAWC not only changed my life but saved it.”

“I remember the day I decided to ask for help. My husband had started a fight with me the night before which ended in him threatening me with a knife from the kitchen. A friend of mine who knew what I was going through told me about the Bay Area Women’s Center and their services. I had never heard about them before, but I just knew they would understand my hesitations to leave and help me start the future I always dreamt of for my family.”

Melanie met with an advocate and talked about her options, which included seeking a divorce. She knew that, as much as it might hurt right now, it is what she needed to do to start life over with her kids. Through legal support services, Melanie had help every step of the way.

“It was such an overwhelming time in my life. I had finally left my husband and was living with a friend, and now I had to figure out how to get a divorce and navigate all the legal stuff. My advocate at BAWC helped me gather supporting evidence, fill out forms, and find an affordable and trusted lawyer. Perhaps the most helpful part of all this was that someone went with me to the courthouse. I did not have to face my ex-husband alone, and that made me feel so much more confident.”

The divorce was not a smooth one, but Melanie maintained safety for her family. She regularly reviewed her safety plan with BAWC advocates to ensure she was prepared for any violent scenario she might face with her ex-husband. She was also connected to community resources that helped her build her resume and find employment.

“I get emotional just hearing about the Women’s Center because the services I received truly changed my life. I didn’t know that I could be happy again. I didn’t know that I am a strong, powerful woman. Abuse took so much from me, but BAWC helped me take it all back.”

Domestic violence is a crime of progression. The longer an abusive relationship goes on, the more likely that relationship will end in murder. Because Melanie sought help to separate from her husband, her life was saved. Your support made it possible for Melanie to secure safety and start to live her dream life.

Continued support for survivors just like Melanie is critical. A majority of our programs are funded through state and federal government grants, many of which remain in limbo. As we prepare our already lean budget for next year, we are planning a 25% decrease to meet anticipated funding deficits. Our doors will always be open 24/7, but survivors need your support to stay safe.
