This handsome Victorian-era outhouse/privy was most likely built in the 1880s–1890s during the height of America’s Victorian building boom. It features classic Italianate “Bracketed” style details (ornate decorative corbels/brackets with scrollwork supporting the eaves) combined with Queen Anne influences — exactly the kind of high-style trim seen on many of Quincy’s grand historic homes from the city’s prosperous Mississippi River boom years. The hipped roof with generous overhang, clapboard siding, working shutters, paneled door, and small window give it wonderful presence. Inside, the original plaster walls and ceiling were a luxurious upgrade far beyond typical plain privies.

It was salvaged from Edina, Missouri (purchased there in 1991 for $100) and thoughtfully relocated to Quincy, where it has stood for decades. Square nails throughout and the overall craftsmanship confirm its age and authenticity. Standing tall with excellent proportions, it has real “garden folly” character that would complement any historic property beautifully.

Perfect for:

• Restoration as a charming garden house, she-shed, potting shed, playhouse, or unique lawn ornament

• Architectural salvage (those brackets and trim are standout features)

• An outstanding Eagle Scout or historic preservation project — complete with documented relocation history across two states

While the roof and interior need work (some collapsed lath/plaster and general aging), the structure is solid and full of authentic period details ready to shine again.

Friends of the Lorenzo Bull House have taken hold of a mission to add this to our Park space.

This is a rare opportunity for anyone passionate about Quincy’s historic architecture, preservation, or Victorian-era treasures. It would be right at home on a historic property in the East End District or similar setting. This unique Privy will make a new home at the Lorenzo Bull Park. We do need your support to see this through.
