At BoMeric Horse Rescue, we are dedicated to saving the elderly, sick, abandoned, neglected horses, and those trapped in the slaughter pipeline. We’ve devoted our lives to caring for these beautiful animals, ensuring they receive the love, medical attention, and respect they deserve. We’ve leased acres of stunning pastures and outbuildings in Wisconsin, creating a safe haven for horses in need. We can offer horses a true paradise. But for many horses, time is running out.

Our Mission

At BoMeric Horse Rescue, our mission is simple yet profound: to save, rehabilitate, and care for horses in desperate need. All our current residents are elderly or special needs, and it is our greatest honor to provide them with the love and care they deserve in their golden years.

We work tirelessly to help as many horses as possible, taking in horses from local kill pens, owner surrenders, and abuse or neglect cases referred by authorities. We also monitor kill pens nationwide and collaborate with groups dedicated solely to bailing horses out of these dire situations.

Our dedicated quarantine barn ensures new arrivals are safe and cared for while transitioning to a better life. Every day, we strive to rescue horses at risk or suffering, providing them with a safe, stable, and loving environment where they can heal and thrive.

Why Horse Rescue Is Desperately Needed

The reality for thousands of horses in the U.S. is heartbreaking.

Tens of thousands are shipped to slaughter in Mexico and Canada each year, enduring unimaginable suffering.
Elderly horses, who’ve given their lives to humans, are abandoned simply because they can no longer be ridden.
There are no federal laws protecting these horses, leaving them vulnerable to neglect, abuse, and cruel deaths.
Even babies and pregnant mares are sent to slaughter—they are not spared.

While many people imagine horses thriving in picturesque barns and pastures, the truth is that countless horses face unspeakable hardships every day. Without intervention, their suffering goes unnoticed, and their lives end in tragedy.

Meet Duncan
Duncan was rescued from a kill pen on June 30, 2022, just hours away from being shipped to Mexico for slaughter. At only 5.5 years old, Duncan is a stunning Dutch Warmblood—a breed known for their elegance in English riding disciplines.

Someone clearly invested time and love in Duncan. His ground manners are impeccable, and he free lunges like a dream. But a tragic accident left him with impaired back-leg function, making him unfit as a show horse. That’s likely why he ended up in the slaughter pipeline.

Today, Duncan is thriving on our farm. His playful, toddler-like antics bring joy to everyone here. While he’s no longer a show horse, he’s found a forever home with us, where he’s loved for who he is, not what he can do.

Meet Katie
Katie is a spunky elderly mare with a story that will break—and warm—your heart. When Katie arrived at BoMeric, she was a walking skeleton, rescued from the kill pen in Columbus, WI. Initially believed to be 20–22 years old, she’s actually closer to 30!

Katie was starving, despite food being right in front of her, because she had almost no functioning teeth. Yet her sweet disposition shone through from the moment we met her.

We discovered that Katie had a rich past: she was purchased 12 years ago by a family in Barring, MO, to teach their daughter to ride. Together, they enjoyed 4-H events, shows, barrel racing, and trail riding. But when Katie began losing weight and required more care, her owner decided she was too much trouble and sent her to auction.

Katie thrived with just one simple change—a soft food diet. She’s now a picture of health, even needing to slim down this spring! Katie has a special place here: she’s adored by kid volunteers and has helped adults overcome their fear of horses.

Despite being the smallest horse on the farm, Katie believes she’s a draft mare and leads the larger Belgian and Percheron mares in the pasture. She’s a true testament to the resilience and spirit of horses when given a chance to thrive.

Meet Ginger Girl
Ginger Girl is a 22-year-old Registered Standardbred mare who raced as a trotter, pulling a cart on the track. Her career earnings totaled an impressive $264,000, and as a broodmare, her offspring earned over $2 million.

Yet despite her contributions, Ginger Girl’s retirement wasn’t the peaceful one she deserved. When she could no longer have foals, she was sold to the Amish, worked for a year, and then was sold to a kill buyer.

Rescued by the Standardbred Retirement Foundation in New Jersey, her arthritis and age made shipping her across the country unfeasible. Instead, Ginger Girl came to BoMeric to live out her life in peace.

When she arrived, she was completely shut down. In quarantine, she would retreat to a corner, head down, refusing to engage. Respecting her trauma, we gave her time and space to heal. Slowly, she began to trust. She now comes when called, follows us around, and has discovered a love for treats. Ginger Girl has found her place with us and will live the rest of her days knowing safety and love.

Meet Soap Creek Rockets Royal
Royal is our gentle giant, the baby of the farm a 3-year-old registered Percheron who came to us as a 2-year-old. At 19.1 hands tall and already weighing 2,000 pounds, Royal is still growing and will likely fill out to an even more impressive size.

Despite his size, Royal has the sweetest, most playful personality. He was rescued from an auction in April, where his odds weren’t great. Born with a slight hunchback (called a roach back) and possible vision issues, he was at risk of being sent to slaughter. We outbid the kill buyer to ensure Royal could have the safe, loving life he deserves.

Royal’s goofy behavior and curiosity delight everyone who meets him. He adores people and prefers human companionship over other horses. As a toddler, he’s still learning boundaries—he loves to put everything in his mouth—but his charm wins over all our volunteers.

Already a wonderful ambassador for our rescue, Royal shows everyone that being "different" doesn’t make you worthless. With time, he’ll grow into a true tank of a horse, but for now, he’s adjusting beautifully to life at BoMeric. Royal has a forever home here, where he’ll be loved for exactly who he is.
