When we met this sweet boy at animal control, his file read: “place or euthanize.” But the moment we saw him — tail wagging, eyes bright, leaning in for love — we knew his story wasn’t over.

His name is Max. 💛

On pickup day, Max was bleeding heavily from a large, ruptured mass on his ear. We rushed him straight to the emergency vet, where doctors believe the mass is a mast cell tumor. Samples were taken and sent out, and after a long night of stabilization, the bleeding finally slowed. Within 24 hours, he was comfortable enough to leave ER care. Now Max is safe in his foster home, living with UPNY alumni Mila while we fight for his future.

Despite everything, he is one of the sweetest, most well-adjusted dogs his foster has ever met. He sleeps through the night. No accidents. Loves his walks. Gets along with other animals. Gives the best cuddles. Most of all — he’s happy.

Recently, the tumor has grown and ruptured again, so his oncology and surgical consults have been moved up to this week. We’ll soon know what treatment options are available — but we do know this: saving Max’s life may take nearly every dollar our rescue has. Diagnostics. Oncology. Surgery. Medications. Follow-up care. It adds up quickly — and we are committed to giving him every chance.

Our hope is to treat Max and one day post him for adoption into the forever home he deserves. No matter what happens, we’re grateful he’s surrounded by love instead of sitting in a shelter. Update 3/3/26:

We now know that Max’s cancer is not only in the primary tumor but has already spread. In addition to surgery to remove the tumor, he will need lymph nodes removed in an effort to mitigate further spread and prolong his time with us. His upcoming procedures could total approximately $5,000, with ongoing monthly care — including medications, bloodwork, and monitoring — estimated at about $200 per month. It’s a significant commitment, but Max is not ready to give up, and neither are we!
