In a small village in Ukraine, 500 children attend a school that has become more than a place of learning — it’s a symbol of hope and resilience. Many of these students have lost one or both parents to the war. Others live with the uncertainty of loved ones still serving.

The village community is doing everything it can, but the school needs critical repairs. With limited local funds and many of the village’s men serving on the front lines, we’re asking for your help to make sure this school can stay open and safe.

Past Progress:

School heating facility - pipe repair project

The Fall 2024 phase of the project is aimed to help improve learning conditions for Ukrainian children affected by the war, specifically repairing two pipes of a wood-burning heating facility of a large school in the village of Zdovbytsya in western Ukraine. The school hosts 500 kids including many of those that lost one of their parents to the war, or have been displaced from the occupied towns in the east of Ukraine.

"Rebuild aa School" project report - doors and roof :

In Summer 2022, we helped rebuild a school in the small liberated village of Kolychivka in Chernihiv region, that was previously damaged by the shelling, so kids can go back to school in-person and enjoy each other's company. Specifically our volunteers based in Kyiv purchased and installed the new set of doors to school in October, so it can be officially opened and classes could start. The summer was dedicated to repairing the damaged roof and refurbishing the interior that was affected by shelling. Our volunteers also provided help to local children in the villages in Northern Ukraine.

Sunflower Seeds Ukraine is an all-volunteer organization that responds flexibly and efficiently to the most urgent needs in the hottest war zones in Ukraine. We stay agile due to our small size, multinational team, and direct on-site contacts that we developed in 2014-2015 and adopted to the new realities in 2022. Working with small grassroots organizations like us, is one of the most direct methods to help Ukraine, which is much more impactful than donating to big organizations with equally large logistical bottlenecks.
