Science is losing brilliant minds.

The next big breakthroughs in science and medicine are going to come from diverse and authentic voices.

But, scientists from underrepresented groups are choosing to leave research and discovery careers. They cite burnout, isolation, and imposter syndrome - all because they feel like they don't belong.

With science funding and DEI initiatives under attack, the need is more acute than ever.

Our mission at Science& is to fill this gap and uplift underrepresented scientists to be the next leaders of discovery research.

We teach the skills that no one else does.

Effectively communicating your data is essential for a career in science. Yet these skills are rarely taught.

We teach the art of communication, translated to the practical needs of scientists.

We empower who they already are, instead of telling them who they should be.

Our workshops cover:

Graphic Design - making dense data clear and convincing.
Creative Writing - tackling writing anxiety and finding your voice.
Performance & Improv - owning the room, even if no one looks or sounds like you.
Belonging & Resilience - how to foster sense of belonging in yourself and those around you.

Our approach works for anyone who has struggled to feel like they belong, for any reason, in Science, Engineering, or Math. This may include:

people of color
women
LGBTQIA+ people
people from low-income backgrounds
VISA holders
first-generation college graduates
people with disabilities or chronic illness
people with mental health challenges
neurodivergent people
among many others!

After attending one of our workshops, scientists feel more confident, connected, and optimistic about their careers.

Support scientists like Marianna.

Marianna is a 6th-year PhD candidate studying Immunology who just started writing her dissertation. Marianna is a woman of color, speaks English as a second language, and is the first in her family to go to college.

She's dedicated hours to experiments and is absolutely the expert on her cutting-edge project. But, she's feeling drained, overwhelmed, and unsure as she navigates this career milestone.

Marianna attended our Graphic Design workshop. Afterward she felt accomplished, refreshed, optimistic! We gave her practical tools that she could use right away and helped her realize how far she's come.

Now Marianna knows that she belongs in science and is empowered with the tools she needs to persevere - and succeed - in her career.

Our workshops work.

We've reached almost 400 scientists from across the US. We tripled our reach from last year, and are on-track to do it again in 2025!

We've honed in on exactly what scientists need, and deliver these skills in a way that is both practical and refreshing.

Of our workshop attendees:

93% identify areas for professional improvement
90% would attend another Science& workshop
70% have a greater feeling that they belong

Help publish the recommendations from our Belonging in Science survey as a global, open-access resource.
