We're Four Roots Ranch - the largest animal sanctuary in the United States dedicated to alpacas and llamas. Our family of six has spent the past nine years building a forever home for these often-overlooked animals at our 501(c)(3) sanctuary in Bend, Oregon. Today we care for 102 animals: 51 alpacas, 6 llamas, plus a small menagerie of sheep, goats, and other farm animals who've joined the family along the way.

Every spring, we have a two-day window to get our entire herd shorn before the heat sets in. This year, that's 66 animals: 51 alpacas, 6 llamas, 8 sheep, and 1 angora goat.

The full cost is $2,800, and it’s our biggest single weekend expense of the year.

Shearing isn't cosmetic. For our alpacas, llamas, sheep, and our goat Pixie, it's essential annual care and this weekend is one of the most important things we do for them all year.

In addition to shearing, we also administer vaccinations, trim hooves, and do dental checks - everything bundled into one focused weekend so the whole herd goes into summer in good shape.

With more than half of our herd (59 out of 102 animals) being senior, the care that might seem routine in a younger herd matters even more for them.
