Update!

We are so grateful and overjoyed to share that Sharon has now been safely reunited with her family in the United States!

We are filled with gratitude for those in who worked tirelessly with us to make it possible for Sharon's safe and smooth entry into the U.S., and for the very generous support of our donors who made it possible to cover lodging, meals, transportation, and other fees associated with this complex operation. We praise and thank God for opening a path to entry where there was none and allowing us to witness miracle upon miracle in throughout this entire process.

Up ahead we are praying for Sharon's transition back home, her adjustment to life in America and learning English, the blessing of community to extend God's love and grace to her and her family, and the process associated with normalizing her status for the future.

Thank you so much for being part of this incredible journey! We pray that this family's precious testimony will encourage many others in the North Korean refugee community, and far beyond, as a witness of God's ongoing work of love and faithfulness.

"My family escaped from North Korea, and is one of many who can describe their life as a journey of tears. Along our journey in China I became lost and my family was unable to find me. Since my mother had no one to turn to and could not contact authorities to help find me, my mother eventually had to take my baby brother and flee to the U.S. as refugees for safety and hope for a better future.

My mother never stopped looking for me and a few years later we finally reconnected over the phone. Unfortunately the effort to leave China became increasingly difficult due to CoVid-19 pandemic lock downs, increased surveillance, and my own long recovery after becoming ill with CoVid-19 with no opportunity for medical care while alone and in hiding.

I am so grateful that I eventually recovered and was able to make the long journey out into another country. My mother, a single mom with little income, worked hard for months to scrape together enough funds to finally meet me. It was like a dream to have a brief reunion with my mother and brother after 13 long years. After a couple days together it was painful to separate again, but my family had to return to the U.S. since my brother is still attending school and it is too expensive for my mother to afford extended travel costs.

My Hope

My mother and brother are proud U.S. citizens, and as I heard about their lives in the U.S. over the phone during these past years I began to realize that America is truly a nation of freedom where you can work hard and dream for a brighter future. As a young woman who experienced a harsh life in North Korea, this freedom and value of girls and women resonates so deeply with me. As I wait to see if a reunion with my family will be possible, each day I am praying that my family's story will have a happy ending with all of us finally home together in the U.S.. Please pray with me as I hope the end of my horrific journey is near, and I can begin my life with my family and new country to call home.

Your gift helps to cover the cost of the daughter's safe shelter, meals, and personal needs while waiting for approval to join her family.
This fundraising goal is based on an estimate of 6 months worth of expenses where she is located.
We do not have a timeline or guarantee for her approval to enter the U.S. and join her family.
In this uncertain time of waiting, your support and prayers help to ensure the daughter's safety, and assist her family with this expense.
Please pray with us for this family to be reunited quickly and safely on U.S. soil and for continued healing for all of the trauma they endured.
If additional funds are raised beyond what is needed for shelter expenses, any additional funds will be used toward the daughter's resettlement needs, including filing fees for asylum, family reunion visa, and possibly employment authorization application.

Our Connection

Around 2017-2018 my family became connected to PSALT through a recommendation from another North Korean refugee in the U.S.. Over the years PSALT was such a steady source of blessing and prayer support for my family. We are so grateful to the entire PSALT team for their continued prayers, support, and willingness to sponsor my case.

나의 이야기

저희 가족은 북한에서 탈출했고, 눈물의 여정이라고 할 만한 삶을 살았습니다. 탈북 후 중국에서 이어지는 여정 중, 저는 길을 잃었고 가족들은 저를 찾을 수 없었습니다. 저의 어머니에게는 (저를 찾기 위해) 신뢰할 만한 사람이 없었던 데다 정부 당국에도 연락할 수 없었기 때문에 어머니는 결국 저의 아기 동생을 데리고 안전을 위해, 그리고 더 나은 미래에 대한 희망을 갖고 우선 미국으로 피난을 가게 되었습니다.

어머니는 저를 찾는 일을 멈추지 않았고, 몇 년 후 어머니와 저는 드디어 전화로 재회할 수 있었습니다. 그러나 안타깝게도 코로나 팬데믹이 시작되면서 시행된 봉쇄, 강화된 감시, 그리고 제 자신이 코로나에 걸렸지만 의료 지원을 받을 수 없는 상황에서 회복하는 데 시간이 오래 걸리면서 중국을 떠난다는 것은 점점 더 어려워졌습니다.

감사하게도 저는 건강을 회복하여 중국을 떠나 다른 나라로의 긴 여정을 다시 이어갈 수 있었습니다. 그리고 싱글맘인 어머니는 적은 수입이지만 몇 달 동안 열심히 일해서 마침내 저를 만날 수 있는 자금을 모았습니다. 13년 만에 어머니와 동생과 짧은 재회를 하는 것은 마치 꿈만 같았습니다. 다시 헤어져야 한다는 사실은 가슴 아팠지만, 제 동생이 취학 중이고 어머니는 해외 장기 체류비용을 감당하기 어려워서 가족은 다시 미국으로 돌아가야 했습니다.

어머니와 동생은 이제 자랑스러운 미국 시민이 되었습니다. 지난 몇 년 동안 전화로 미국에서의 그들의 삶을 들으면서, 저는 미국이 진정으로 자유의 나라라는 것을 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 미국에서는 열심히 일하면 더 밝은 미래를 꿈꿀 수 있다는 점에서요. 북한에서 모진 삶을 경험한 젊은 여성으로서, 이 자유와 여성을 존중하는 미국의 가치가 제게 깊이 와 닿습니다. 가족과 재회하기를 매일같이 기다리면서 저는 저희 가족 모두가 함께 미국에서 보금자리를 마련하는 행복한 결말로 나아가기를 기도하고 있습니다. 저의 현재 고통스러운 여정이 속히 끝나고 가족과 새로운 나라에서 새 삶을 시작할 수 있도록 기도해 주세요.
