About MPV: Cultivating a Culture Rooted in Human Rights

We believe, to once and for all undo infringement of human rights, we must change the culture to one that is rooted in respect, love and compassion. And through 19+ years of our work in public education, advocacy, and the arts, we are doing just that.

What makes people feel they can discriminate against you based on your gender, sexuality, the color of your skin or religion? We were not born to discriminate.

In the U.S., our advocacy includes support for the separation of religion and state, for the numerous LGBTQI+ rights cases in the courts, and for reproductive justice. We are part of a large coalition in support of raising the marriage age to 18 and to passing the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and a small group that sued the Trump administration for its Religious Freedom Commission's promotion of Christian Nationalism.

Internationally, our initiative #ImamsForShe provides girls overnight camps where we train them of their rights, critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills, because when you have money in your pocket, you are less likely to put up with verbal and physical abuse! We trained 3,400 imams in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and 400 imams in Afghanistan on positive masculinity and skills on how to engage and preach for women and girls' rights.

At the U.N., we challenge Muslim-majority countries of their human rights abuses by submitting formal reports as well as host panels with government officials, policy makers and advocates.

MPV is a progressive Muslim voice on contemporary issues. We voice our perspectives with policy briefs, by participating in civil discourse, engaging with the media and government entities, and by partnering with both Muslim and non-Muslim progressive organizations.

MPV is a California registered 501(c)(3). Since our inception in 2007, we have secured DPI and ECOSOC Special Consultative Status at the U.N., and a founding member of Alliance of Inclusive Muslims, or AIM, an umbrella organization spanning 13 countries and 17 cities.
