Our Story begins on a cold winter night in 2009...

Fat Cat Rescue began with an urgent cry for help that could not be ignored. One fateful night, co-founder Toots Larsen heard the unmistakable howls of Goldie, a stray cat who often roamed the neighborhood. But this time, Goldie’s cries were different—filled with desperation. Toots stepped outside to investigate but found nothing and returned indoors. Yet Goldie wouldn’t give up, her wails persistent, refusing to be silenced.

Driven by the cat’s unwavering call, Toots went out again and made a heartbreaking discovery. Huddled by the side of a house was an emaciated cat, stiff and motionless, nearly frozen to the wall. His frail body seemed on the verge of giving up. Toots carefully scooped him up, tucked him inside her jacket, and rushed him to the vet. The cat, later named Georgie Porgie, was full-grown but weighed less than four pounds—so fragile and weak that the vet doubted he would survive the night. Against all odds, Georgie pulled through. That night became the turning point that sparked Fat Cat Rescue. Inspired by Goldie’s determination and Georgie Porgie’s incredible will to live, Toots, along with her daughter Kaye Larsen, made a life-changing decision to dedicate themselves to rescuing and advocating for the homeless cats of Lake County.

What began with a single act of compassion blossomed into a mission to save countless lives. In 2012, Fat Cat Rescue, Inc. officially became a 501(c)(3) licensed non-profit charity. Since then, the impact the Larsens and the dedicated Fat Cat volunteers have had on the homeless cat population in Lake County is truly remarkable. To date, over 12,000 cats have been spayed and neutered through the organization’s efforts, drastically reducing the number of homeless cats in the community. On July 28, 2018, Fat Cat Rescue embarked on a significant transition, moving from North Chicago to a new location in Wadsworth/Zion, Illinois. The new site was not ready—there were no fences, no cat rooms, not even proper flooring in the barn—but the team leaped in, bringing along their personal cats to start building the rescue and sanctuary. Despite these challenges, a small group of volunteers stayed behind to care for the remaining cats in North Chicago. Progress was slow, but the passion and love for these animals kept them going, even when faced with difficulties and heartbreak. Over time, there have been moments of immense joy and deep sorrow. Sadly, all four of the founder’s personal cats have passed away, along with Kaye’s parents. Yet, the team continues, step by step, fueled by their mission to save more cats.

This journey has been one of teamwork. Volunteers, donors, and supporters have all played crucial roles in keeping Fat Cat Rescue going. From those who donate financially, contribute food, or pay medical bills to those who foster kittens, bottle-feed, manage adoptions, and transport cats to vet appointments—every effort makes a difference. It truly is "Teamwork that makes the dream work."
