Rebuilding What Broke Us is a multidisciplinary story world rooted in one object: my family’s 2004 Honda Accord Coupe.

After divorce, foreclosure, and my father’s stroke, that car became the last place our family still felt intact. It carried our arguments and our laughter. It carried our bodies across state lines. It carried a version of us that no longer exists.

Now it becomes a restoration, a documentary, a public installation, and a book. One project, four expressions, all built to honor Black family legacy and tell the truth about what happens after a medical crisis.

What this project includes

1) The Auto Restoration (the artifact)
We are restoring the Accord inside and out as a future classic and a living family archive. Every design choice will be intentional: color, texture, sound, and objects that reflect the joy and chaos we survived.

2) The Documentary / Docuseries (the story)
A documentary project that begins with my father, then expands into conversations with other Black men navigating stroke recovery, identity shifts, and what it costs a family to heal. This series holds space for private stories and also speaks to the public narratives we’ve witnessed from well-known artists and entertainers who have shared health-recovery journeys.

3) The Mobile Installation (the impact)
The restored vehicle will travel as a moving installation across Atlanta, visiting historically Black neighborhoods and community spaces to spark conversation about stroke awareness, caregiving, and foreclosure. Think pop-up screenings, story circles, and community partnerships with churches, schools, and cultural institutions.

4) The Companion Book (the tool)
A practical, compassionate guide written by me and my siblings for families and caregivers. It will translate the chaos into clarity: what to do, what to track, what questions to ask, and how to support recovery without losing yourself in the process.

Why it matters

Stroke and foreclosure change people, families, and futures. This project turns one family’s survival into a public resource, a cultural artifact, and a space for healing conversations.
