Somebody has to read them.

A report arrives at two in the morning. A neighbour has been watching a dog tied out through a cold snap, and has finally typed it out — the address, the weeks of it, the thing they have not been able to stop thinking about.

That report does not become a record because it was submitted. It becomes a record because a person opens it, reads it, weighs what is actually there, checks it against everything else on file, and decides. Sometimes the decision is that there is not enough, and it never goes on the map at all. That judgement is the entire product. It is the reason a shelter can trust what they find when they search a name before an adoption.

Filing a report costs one dollar. We keep it there on purpose — enough to stop the registry filling with noise, low enough that cost is never the reason somebody stays quiet about what they saw.

One dollar does not pay for the reading.

That is what this is for. Your gift pays for the hours somebody spends with the hard ones — the reports that are almost enough, the ones that need a second source, the ones where getting it wrong means either an animal stays where they are, or a person is named for something they did not do.

If you give through petoffenders.org, you can put a name to it — the dog asleep under your desk, the cat who owns your windowsill, the horse who is fine, the one you still miss. Their name joins the supporters page, and it stays there.

It is a small, strange, good thing: the animal who is safe standing for the ones who are not.

Where it goes

petOffenders is a project of Louisiana Husky Rescue, a registered nonprofit. Givebutter processes every donation for us at no charge — that is only possible because donors leave the optional tip at checkout, and we are genuinely grateful to both.

We never see or store your card. We never link a donation to a report: the dollar somebody pays to file is deliberately unconnected to the record it creates, so nobody can ever suggest a record was bought.
