Keep a Crow in St. Johns!

The crows have landed in Portland—and St. Johns wants to keep one!

The Follow the Crows scavenger hunt has brought these incredible crow sculptures throughout Portland in celebration of Wildwood, the beloved book set right here in St. Johns and Forest Park. The scavenger hunt ends October 31, and on November 15, the crows will be auctioned off to benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Since the crows arrived, we’ve heard the same question again and again from neighbors, businesses, and community members:

Can we keep a crow in St. Johns?

We think we should try!

A group of St. Johns organizations and community members are joining forces to raise $10,000 so we can collectively bid on one of the crows and, if successful, give it a permanent home in St. Johns.

The money used to purchase the crow at auction will support Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Our community gets the chance to keep a piece of this special project in St. Johns while also supporting an important cause.

FAQs

Who is managing the money raised through this campaign?

Local arts nonprofit Vibe of Portland has agreed to serve as the nonprofit fiscal sponsor for this community-led effort.

A 501(c)(3) arts nonprofit founded in 2007, Vibe has worked for nearly 20 years to expand access to arts education for young people throughout Portland. Vibe also has experience supporting public art projects, including murals in Southeast Portland and a current mural project here in St. Johns.

Funds raised through this campaign will be held by Vibe specifically for the crow project. Vibe will not be taking an administrative fee for managing this campaign so all donations raised will go towards the project. Give Butter also only takes 0-2% admin fee to maximize our fundraising dollars. On other platforms, admin fees could take up to 10% of the funds raised.

What will the $10,000 cover?

Our fundraising goal is designed to cover the full cost of bringing a crow home, including:

Funds to bid on a crow at the November 15 auction
Installation in a permanent, publicly accessible location in St. Johns
A reserve for future care and maintenance so our crow stays beautiful for years to come

What happens if we don't raise the full $10,000?

Our first priority is raising enough to make a competitive bid at the November 15 auction. The $10,000 goal also accounts for installation and future maintenance, so reaching less than the full goal does not necessarily mean we won't be able to bid. For the Curious Cat auction, cats went between $6,000-11,000.

If we are unable to secure a crow at the auction, we will communicate with donors about the outcome and follow the campaign's stated refund policy.

Where will the crow be installed?

Our goal is to place the crow in a publicly accessible location in St. Johns where residents and visitors can enjoy it for years to come.

The pocket park within the St. Johns Plaza is a leading possibility, but the final location will depend on coordination and approval with the appropriate City partners.

Who will take care of the crow once it's installed?

The St. Johns Boosters currently serve as stewards of the St. Johns Plaza in partnership with PBOT. If the crow is installed in the pocket park or another location within the Plaza agreement, the Boosters would coordinate with the City and community volunteers to help care for and maintain it.

Any funds remaining after the purchase and installation of the crow will be reserved for its future maintenance and care.

Which Crow will we get?

There's an X factor with auctions - VisitStJohnsPDX will do a poll soon to gauge what the community's favorite crows are.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Donations are being made through Vibe of Portland, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donors will receive a receipt for their records.

What if you raise more money than you need?

Any funds remaining after the successful purchase and installation of the crow will be reserved for future maintenance and care of the sculpture, helping ensure our community crow remains a beautiful piece of public art for years to come.

Many thanks,

Your St. Johns Community

Muchas gracias,

La comunidad de St. Johns
