The Catskill Symphony Orchestra presents an innovative evening dedicated entirely to the extraordinary expressive range of stringed instruments. The concert opens with Gustav Mahler's Adagietto from his Fifth Symphony, where strings and harp create one of music's most emotionally profound and intimate statements. Felix Mendelssohn's String Sonata in B minor follows, showcasing the composer's mastery of chamber-like textures and melodic elegance within the string family.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis demonstrates the revolutionary possibilities of string orchestration through its groundbreaking use of divided string sections creating antiphonal, cathedral-like effects based on Renaissance church music. The evening culminates with John Corigliano's "The Red Violin: Suite for Violin and Orchestra," featuring acclaimed violinist Michael Emery. This contemporary masterpiece, drawn from the Academy Award-winning film score, explores both traditional and extended violin techniques while telling the epic story of a legendary instrument across centuries and continents. Emery's virtuosic performance will bring this compelling musical narrative to life, demonstrating how strings can whisper, sing, weep, and soar.
