As an 11-year-old girl in a rural Kenyan community, Christine faced a terrifying cultural tradition. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a grave form of violence against girls. When Christine’s grandmother began pressuring her to undergo the ceremony, Christine confided in a friend, who introduced her to Msichana Empowerment Kuria (MEK), a partner of She’s the First.

MEK provided Christine with a safe space to escape a threatening home environment. With MEK’s guidance and resources from She’s the First, Christine was taken back to school. She received everything she needed — including medical and trauma care, a mentor, friends, and most importantly: agency over her future.

The girl-centered, community-driven work of MEK and She’s the First emphasizes how all girls have the right to protection from all forms of violence. Now 17, Christine continues with her education and designs programs for preventing and ending FGM. Christine is leading her community towards a new future.
