Story

On November 2, 2020, the Newton City Council voted to officially recognize the 2nd Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day. The 22-2 vote was the culmination of extended advocacy and grassroots efforts by Indigenous residents of Newton and allies.

The Indigenous Peoples Day Newton Committee—formed following the vote—is an Indigenous-led, volunteer committee unified in our vision of a day of remembrance, education, and celebration of Native peoples.

In 2021, we held our inaugural Indigenous Peoples Day Ceremonial Celebration at Albemarle Field. This year on October 9, we will be holding our 3rd annual Celebration and we are anticipating over 1,000 attendees!

Our Celebration is a free, family-friendly, outdoor, day-long, Indigenous-led, and volunteer-run event. It uplifts and celebrates the music, dance, poetry, and visual art of diverse Native artists in the Northeast and beyond. The Celebration will feature over 50 Indigenous artists, educators, activists, businesses, food vendors, and community organizations.

This Celebration is only made possible by the generosity of individual donors and sponsors. Any donation, no matter the size, would be incredibly helpful in making this Celebration a reality for a 3rd year. Your donations will go directly toward payment for all of our speakers and presenters, permit costs, tent and table rentals, youth activity materials, and ASL interpreters.

If you represent an organization or business that would like to sponsor the Celebration, please visit tinyurl.com/SponsorIPDN.

If you would like to support by joining our Committee, please check out the open positions at tinyurl.com/JoinIPDN. If you would like to support by volunteering on the day of the Celebration, please reach out to us at [email protected].
