🌼 If you’re here you likely already know how important language work has been in my life and how passionate I am about Language Justice. 🌼
As a teenager, I became increasingly fluent in Spanish and began to use my language skills to interpret for the first time at the age of 19 in a rural clinic for migrant farmworkers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. That summer was life-changing for me and led me to the work that I now do.
After that first experience, I returned to my hometown of Williamsburg, VA, where I knew we also lacked Spanish-English interpreters. I began interpreting for a social worker at an early Head Start program. Pretty soon I was getting calls at all hours from young mothers, frantic to get in touch with their social worker about an urgent situation.
I feel called to the systems-change work I do at Wave specifically because of all the barriers I’ve witnessed while interpreting in medical institutions (& beyond) throughout my career. At Wave, we know that we ALL win, when our friends, neighbors, and family can fully participate in their communities, access services, and can lead from their own lived experiences in the language(s) in which they are most powerful. Wave partners with organizations to build the infrastructure needed to create multilingual programs and provides spaces for newer language workers to gain skills and build solidarity. 🫶
As speaking a language other than English is on the verge of criminalization and philanthropy tightens its proverbial belt, we need your support to keep doing this culture-shifting work. With your help, we can build a future where everyone can thrive, regardless of the language(s) they speak.
