My name is Laura Cardwell. I'm the executive director of the New York State Independent Living Council, a nonprofit organization that oversees state planning for federally funded centers for independent living (CILs). The mission of NYSILC is to increase the advocacy skills, leadership development and empowerment of people with disabilities.

I am raising money to support new programming to establish New York youth and young adults as leaders in the disability community. Your tax-deductible contribution will make it possible for us to cover travel costs, facilitate and host accessible meetings for our new Youth Leadership initiative (age 16 to 25). Disabled youth and young adult leaders are the future of the Independent Living movement (and the world), and they deserve real opportunities to connect and grow - not just Zoom meetings and emails.

This summer, I donated my car to be driven in the Altamont Fair demolition derby on August 23. It was driven by Chandler Miller, whose mother, Mary Miller, has been with Capital District Center for Independence for many years. Chandler placed 1st in the second chance heat and took home a trophy!

Before my car belonged to me, it belonged to my father, who passed away in June after an extended illness and hospice care at home. My support network was incredibly helpful and kind during his illness and after he passed, which I am grateful for. I have also been able to donate many of his supplies and medical equipment to local centers for independent living and organizations serving people with disabilities.
