Threads of Belonging is a handwoven public mural celebrating the textile traditions of Palestinian, Filipino, and Hmong communities — and we need your help to bring it to life!

What is this project?

Artists Pachia Lucy Vang, Jamie Cardenas, and Ren Allathkani are creating an 8-by-30-foot handwoven mural to be installed on the exterior wall of the Valley Hi–North Laguna Library in South Sacramento in spring 2026. This building-scale artwork will literally weave threads of color and culture together — honoring the stories, migration journeys, and shared humanity of our community.

The mural draws on the rich textile traditions of three communities:

Hmong paj ntaub — intricate appliqué featuring the "house" motif, a symbol of family, memory, and the longing for home
Ilocano kusikus — traditional Filipino weaving representing connection and continuity
Palestinian tatreez — embroidery carrying centuries of cultural identity and resilience

Why does this matter?

In a moment when so many communities are being asked whether they belong, Threads of Belonging offers a resounding answer: you do. Art has the power to heal, to unite, and to remind us of our shared humanity. This mural will be a permanent fixture of District 8 — a neighborhood that deserves public art that reflects its people.
