The Grace Effect

Stronger youth. Stronger families. Stronger communities.

It starts with you. It grows through all of us.

Every young person deserves more than potential—they deserve safety, stability, opportunity, and trusted adults who help them believe in a future beyond their current circumstances.

In Saginaw, these needs are especially urgent. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately one in three Saginaw residents lives below the poverty line, and nearly half of children in the city live in poverty. Saginaw also continues to experience violent crime at rates higher than Michigan and national averages, with local law enforcement and community reports documenting persistent concerns related to assault, robbery, and gun violence. These conditions can affect where young people feel safe, how they travel to school and programs, and whether they believe positive opportunities are available to them.

Violence does not affect only the people directly involved. Young people may witness violence, lose loved ones, experience trauma, or live with the constant fear that violence could happen in their neighborhood, school, home, or community. Exposure to violence can contribute to anxiety, depression, anger, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, hopelessness, and challenges trusting others. It can also increase the risk of young people becoming disconnected from school, supportive relationships, and healthy activities.

For many children and teens, growing up is complicated by challenges that are often invisible to the outside world. Some are battling food insecurity, homelessness, poverty, or unstable housing. Some are living in broken or fragmented family systems, moving between caregivers, or carrying responsibilities far beyond their years. Others are struggling with racism, learning disabilities, untreated or fragmented mental health needs, poor self-esteem, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of self-harm.

These experiences can affect every part of a young person’s life. Hunger can make it difficult to focus in school. Homelessness can make it hard to feel safe or plan for tomorrow. Poverty can limit access to books, technology, transportation, enrichment, and mental health care. Racism can cause young people to question whether they belong or whether their dreams are realistic. Learning disabilities can become sources of shame when children do not receive the patience, accommodations, and encouragement they need.

When a young person feels rejected, overwhelmed, or alone, hopelessness can begin to feel permanent. Low self-esteem can make asking for help seem impossible. Suicidal thoughts and self-harm are not signs of weakness; they are urgent signals that a young person is experiencing pain and needs compassionate, immediate support.

No child should have to face these challenges alone.

At Guided Grace Family and Youth Services (GGFYS), our mission is mental wellness for all. We serve young people and families with compassion, dignity, and a commitment to meeting people where they are. We understand that mental wellness is connected to the conditions surrounding a child: whether they have enough to eat, a safe place to sleep, supportive relationships, access to learning, and adults who recognize their strengths.

Our work is not about labeling young people by their struggles. It is about seeing the whole person—their pain, their gifts, their culture, their dreams, and their capacity to heal and grow.

That’s The Grace Effect.

The Grace Effect happens when a young person who feels invisible is seen.

It happens when a child who is hungry receives care without shame. It happens when a family facing homelessness is met with compassion instead of judgment. It happens when a student with a learning disability is given tools and encouragement rather than being defined by what is difficult. It happens when a teenager who feels hopeless finds a trusted adult who listens, takes their pain seriously, and helps connect them to appropriate support.

It also happens when a young person affected by violence is given a safe place to process what they have experienced, build healthy relationships, develop coping skills, and imagine a future that is not defined by fear.

Sometimes, The Grace Effect begins with a book. A book can offer escape, language, imagination, and the reminder that a child’s story is still being written.

Sometimes, it begins with a meal, a safe activity, a mentor, or a caring conversation.

Sometimes, it is an HBCU visit that makes college feel possible, a paid work experience that builds confidence, or a creative program that gives a young person a healthy way to express emotions they cannot yet explain.

These moments matter because they can change what a young person believes is possible—and what they believe is possible for themselves.

Since 2020, GGFYS has served more than 1,300 children, creating safe, supportive opportunities for young people to learn, build confidence, find their voice, and feel connected to their families and communities.

The need is immediate. Young people need meaningful support now—not someday.

In 2026, our summer programming reached 326 youth. Through our Mobile Book Tour and related outreach, we placed 800 books into the community. We also took 11 students on an HBCU tour, helping them see college as a real and attainable next step.

Those numbers represent more than programs delivered. They represent children who had someone invest in them, families who received support, and young people who were given a reason to believe their future can be bigger than their current circumstances.

Meeting young people where they are

GGFYS recognizes that youth development and mental wellness cannot be separated from basic needs and lived experience.

A child who is worried about where their next meal will come from may need nourishment before they can concentrate on a lesson. A young person experiencing homelessness may need consistency and belonging before they can trust a program or adult. A teenager facing poverty may need transportation, technology, career exposure, or workforce preparation before a long-term goal feels reachable.

A young person who has witnessed or experienced violence may need patience, consistency, trauma-informed support, and trusted adults who understand that fear, anger, withdrawal, or difficulty concentrating may be responses to trauma rather than signs of defiance.

A young person experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm may need immediate connection to qualified mental health professionals, crisis resources, and caring adults who respond without panic, punishment, or dismissal. Our role is to create supportive environments, notice when a young person may be struggling, encourage help-seeking, and connect youth and families with appropriate professional and emergency resources.

We do not expect one program, one conversation, or one organization to solve every challenge. We believe in building a network of care that includes families, schools, mental health professionals, community organizations, faith communities, employers, public safety partners, and young people themselves.

Our goal is to help ensure that no child is reduced to a diagnosis, a difficult circumstance, a family crisis, exposure to violence, or a mistake. Every young person deserves to be treated as a complete human being with strengths, needs, rights, and possibilities.

Help the effect grow.

Your gift can help provide the experiences and support young people need right now:

A gift of $100 can help provide books, learning materials, enrichment supplies, food support, or hands-on activities that keep youth engaged, curious, and growing.
A gift of $500 can help support a young person’s participation in meaningful programming, including mentoring, college and career exploration, workforce preparation, family engagement, or mental wellness activities.
Gifts of every size help create safe, supportive spaces where young people feel valued, heard, and encouraged to reach their goals.

Your support can help provide:

Food security and basic support: Resources and community connections that help address hunger, instability, and the barriers that make it difficult for youth to participate fully.
Safe and consistent spaces: Programs where young people can learn, build relationships, express themselves, and experience stability away from violence and isolation.
Mental wellness support: Mindfulness, emotional wellness education, positive relationships, supportive adults, and connections to appropriate professional resources.
Violence prevention and trauma support: Positive activities, trusted relationships, conflict-resolution skills, mentoring, and trauma-informed support that help young people respond to violence without allowing it to define their future.
Suicide prevention and crisis awareness: Compassionate environments where warning signs are taken seriously, youth are encouraged to speak up, and families are connected with qualified help when urgent concerns arise.
Support for youth experiencing self-harm or hopelessness: Nonjudgmental encouragement, safety-focused conversations, family support, and referrals to trained mental health professionals and crisis services.
Learning and discovery: Literacy, STEM, music, art, and hands-on enrichment that help youth discover their strengths.
Support for learning differences: Encouragement, patience, individualized attention, and connections to resources that help young people learn without shame.
Confidence and self-worth: Opportunities that help youth recognize their abilities, develop healthy coping skills, and understand that their circumstances do not define their value.
Cultural belonging and racial equity: Experiences that affirm identity, challenge isolation, celebrate diverse histories, and help young people feel respected and included.
Skills for the future: Financial literacy, career exploration, college exposure, and youth workforce experiences that prepare participants for independence.
Family and community connections: Parent engagement and shared experiences that strengthen the support systems youth rely on.

When you give, you help put a book in a child’s hands, create a safe place to learn, connect a student with a college possibility, provide food or basic support, or offer an experience that builds confidence and direction.

You also help communicate something powerful: You matter. You are not alone. Your life has value. Your future is worth protecting and preparing for.

The realities young people carry

Many young people learn early to hide what they are experiencing.

A child may come to a program smiling while worrying about eviction. A teenager may appear angry when they are actually grieving, hungry, exhausted, or afraid. A student may avoid reading aloud because previous experiences have made them feel embarrassed about a learning disability. A young person may withdraw from friends because racism, bullying, family conflict, community violence, or mental health symptoms have made connection feel unsafe.

Some youth become caregivers for younger siblings. Some move between homes. Some experience violence, neglect, discrimination, or the loss of a parent. Some are navigating mental illness without consistent access to treatment. Others are trying to understand their identity while receiving messages that they are not enough.

These experiences can shape how young people see themselves and the world. They may begin to believe that asking for help is a burden, that failure is inevitable, or that their pain will never change.

GGFYS works to interrupt those messages.

We create opportunities for young people to experience encouragement instead of shame, connection instead of isolation, and possibility instead of hopelessness. We help youth identify strengths they may not yet recognize and connect families with resources that support stability and healing.

We know that trust takes time. We know that progress is not always linear. We know that a young person may need to hear the same message many times before they believe it:

You are worthy of care. You deserve support. You can ask for help. Your future is still unfolding.

A community response to a community need

The challenges facing young people are too complex for families to carry alone.

Saginaw’s poverty and violence concerns are connected to larger systems and circumstances, including housing instability, limited access to transportation and services, economic hardship, neighborhood disinvestment, trauma, and unequal access to opportunity. Families may be working hard and still struggling to meet basic needs. Parents and caregivers may be navigating their own trauma, illness, unemployment, grief, or limited access to services.

Support must be compassionate and practical. It must recognize the dignity of families rather than blame them for circumstances they did not create.

That is why GGFYS focuses on relationships and partnerships. We believe young people thrive when the adults and institutions around them communicate, collaborate, and share responsibility for their well-being.

Our work helps create bridges:

Between youth and trusted adults.
Between families and community resources.
Between students and educational opportunities.
Between young people and mental wellness support.
Between lived experience and leadership.
Between present challenges and future possibilities.

When a community invests in youth, it does more than support individual children. It strengthens families, reduces isolation, builds resilience, helps prevent violence, and creates a healthier future for everyone.

You belong in this story.

The Grace Effect grows when neighbors, businesses, families, schools, faith communities, and friends choose to invest in young people together.

Your gift is not simply a donation. It is a message to a child that their well-being matters, their voice matters, and their future is worth preparing for.

It is a message to a family facing hardship that they do not have to navigate every challenge alone.

It is a message to a young person experiencing hopelessness that their pain deserves attention and that reaching for help is an act of courage.

It is a message to a student who has been underestimated that their learning difference does not limit their worth.

It is a message to a child affected by racism, exclusion, or violence that they belong and deserve to be treated with dignity.

Give $100, give $500, or give what you can today. Every gift helps create opportunities that can change a young person’s path.

Share this campaign. Invite someone to join you. Encourage a business, school, congregation, or community group to become part of the work.

If you are a young person experiencing suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self-harm, or immediate danger, please contact emergency services or a crisis resource in your area now. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or crisis service. You deserve immediate support, and you do not have to face that moment alone.

One gift can help open a door. One caring adult can change a conversation. One safe space can interrupt isolation. One opportunity can restore hope.

Together, we can help make sure more young people have the support to walk through that door.
