Story

This year, Jazz nonprofit Gotham Yardbird Sanctuary has a 7-month long  project "GYS Ladybirds Rising 2023" to curate and produce Live Jazz performances led by female Jazz artists from all over the world to raise awareness on issues concerning environment, woman's empowerment and domestic violence issues by collaborating closely with local nonprofits and organizations to create informative educational events throughout the NYC and also at our for-profit business headquarter Ornithology Jazz Club on 6 Suydam Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn from March till October.

From 7/4, GYS will start 3 month long GYS Ladybirds Rising 2023: DV Safe Sanctuary Campaign to create a grassroots community of advocates with crucial information on Support Systems and Human Rights for DV Victims in NYC.

DV Safe Sanctuary Campaign aims to educate individuals about abusive behaviors in relationships, available support systems, DV victim's right and, to inform business owners about their responsibility as an employer.

Through DV Safe Sanctuary Circle Project with Resource Kit in Linktree in bio @ornithologyjazzclub, we create #dvsafesanctuarycircle social media campaign with a selfie post of those who gained access to the information.

Also, GYS Ladybirds Jazz Messengers project will send female-led Jazz ensembles with alternative trauma healing workshops to Womankind community center in the month of August.

For month of July and September, featured Green E-commerce Vendor through Ornithology Jazz Club will donate 10 % of total sale to this fundraising as well.

All the donation for this fundraising will be distributed to our partner nonprofits:

50% Womankind

30% The Center For Anti-Violence Education

10% KODA

10% GYS

Our final event on 10/1 at KODA house front yard in Governors Island, honoring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, will feature educational workshops by Womankind and The Center For Anti-Violence and on 10/8 at Ornithology Jazz Club will have a panel discussion with artists to talk about art and music for social justice and trauma healing, special improvised duo performance by jazz luminaries Joe Lovano and Judi Silvano, and Live Jazz performances by instrumental trio with 2 female jazz artists that inspired this campaign, Kyoko Oyobe (p) and Julia Penn (ts).
