ABOUT TAP CITY

In 2001, ATDF Founding Artistic Director Tony Waag established Tap City, the New York City Tap Festival, to deepen the appreciation and understanding of tap dance’s rich history and evolution. Held annually in venues across Manhattan, Tap City offered a diverse range of activities including daily master classes, choreography residencies, films, talks, jams, awards, and premiere concert performances. The festival attracted hundreds of dancers and teachers from around the world, fostering a vibrant community dedicated to the celebration of tap dance as an American art form.

Public events included the Copasetic Boat Ride around Manhattan and Tap It Out, a free outdoor performance in Times Square that united hundreds of artists in a choreographed orchestral collage of a cappella rhythms.

Throughout its history, Tap City has showcased many of the field’s most influential tap artists and teachers, honoring generations of masters, innovators, and emerging voices from around the world.

This week we celebrate an iconic New York City event that will never be forgotten.
