Tattoos and Archaeology

What do tattoos and archaeology have in common? More than you might think.

This program explores how personal expression leaves a lasting mark, even when the human body does not. While tattoos themselves rarely survive in the archaeological record, their stories do. Through historical descriptions, artwork, and material culture, we can begin to understand how tattooing traditions were practiced, viewed, and shared across cultures, including early Virginia.

Participants will examine how archaeologists interpret designs through surviving objects such as pottery, where patterns and symbols can reflect the same visual language once carried on skin. We will look at historical depictions of tattooing, discuss cultural meanings, and connect these traditions to the archaeological evidence found in our region.

This is a hands on experience. Guests will explore pottery fragments and create their own, practicing patterns inspired by historical designs. Through this process, we bridge the gap between what is lost and what remains, uncovering how identity, art, and culture endure over time.
