Where a child lives should not determine whether they learn. The Africa School Assistance Project (ASAP) was founded on that belief, and for more than two decades it has acted on it, building schools, supporting students through graduation, and investing in the teachers who make everything else possible.

The single biggest factor in whether a child learns is the teacher in front of them. In rural Tanzania, strong teaching is often the missing piece. Not because teachers lack dedication, but because sustained, practical coaching, the kind that changes what actually happens in a classroom, has been out of reach for most of them.

That is what this campaign changes.

The people behind it

Mectrida Mathias Joseph grew up in a Mwanza village where her primary school squeezed seven grades into five classrooms and a single textbook passed from hand to hand. Samwel Chenya Petro came from Bukumbi, where his family's circumstances made school a strain and teachers were few. Mary Igulu walked a long road to school each morning in Bukumbi, past all the reasons girls like her so often stop.

All three found their way to Idetemya Secondary School in Mwanza, a school ASAP has supported deeply for more than a decade. Mectrida and Mary came up through Kupanda, ASAP's program for girls. Teachers mentored them. Scholarships covered fees their families could never have managed. They finished school, attended university, and became teachers.

Now they are returning as Trainers of Teachers, part of the first cohort ASAP is certifying through a new partnership with TeachUNITED. What was given to them, they are about to give forward, to other teachers, other classrooms, other children.

How the model works

One-off workshops rarely change what happens in a classroom. The evidence is clear on this. What works is sustained coaching, embedded inside the school, week after week, until new skills become habits that stay long after any training ends.

Through its partnership with TeachUNITED, ASAP is training and certifying a cohort of ten local facilitators who will provide exactly that kind of coaching. Each facilitator works with four schools, sitting in on lessons, giving feedback, building ongoing relationships with teachers and school leaders. The model is designed to grow: the teachers they coach become stronger in their practice, and the strongest go on to support their colleagues.

Training begins July 2, 2026. Certification closes December 2026. Deployment begins January 2027.

Why now

Mectrida, Samwel, Mary, and seven of their colleagues begin training on July 2. Certification closes in December. What is raised between now and then determines how many of them deploy in January, and how many teachers, and how many children, they reach in 2027.
