Ian Mason's Story
As a surgical resident in New York City, I spend most of my time caring for patients at the most acute moments of their lives—but I’m constantly reminded that health is shaped long before someone ever reaches the operating room. Many of the challenges I see—delayed care, loss of independence, social isolation—are especially pronounced in older adults.
That’s why I’m proud to support Lifeforce in Later Years (LiLY). LiLY is a neighborhood-based organization that helps older adults remain independent, connected, and cared for—often at no cost—through a model built on neighbors helping neighbors. From coordinating medical appointments and providing practical support at home to creating meaningful social connections, LiLY addresses the everyday barriers that too often go unseen but have a profound impact on health and quality of life.
What stands out to me is how local and human their work is. They’re not just providing services—they’re building a community where aging doesn’t mean isolation. Their model recognizes that something as simple as a ride to an appointment, help with groceries, or regular social interaction can fundamentally change someone’s trajectory.
As I continue my training, I want to be part of improving not just how we treat disease, but how we support people in living well—especially as they age. Supporting LiLY is a way to invest in that vision: one where fewer people fall through the cracks, and more can remain safely, comfortably, and meaningfully connected in their own communities.
