The COVID-19 crisis is an extraordinary challenge and we want to do our part to help those who are struggling financially.

Given the scale of the Emera organization, our leadership role in the community, and the reality that our business continues with relatively minimal disruption, our family of companies are in the fortunate position of being able to do more. While Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas has already donated $1 million to help the community and to Share – a program administered by the Salvation Army that helps customers in need with utility bill payments – we want to do more.

That is why we are banding together with other Emera North American companies to support local food banks in our area. All monies donated by employees for their local campaign will be matched by Emera, doubling the positive impact.

About Harry Chapin Food Bank

Harry Chapin Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, is the largest hunger-relief organization in Southwest Florida. The food bank rescues food that would otherwise go to waste and distributes it to families and others in need through a series of programs that feed 28,000 people a week. They include: Care and Share Senior Feeding Program, Harry’s Helpings, Fulfill Mobile Pantries, In-School Pantries and our Partner Agency Program, which is a network of more than 150 partner agencies in our five-county footprint.

For every dollar donated, the food bank can provide $8 in food value. Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed $42.8 million worth of food in fiscal year 2019. Through our programs, we supplied nearly 26.7 million pounds of food and other grocery items, including 6.4 million pounds of fresh produce. The food is the equivalent of 22.2 million meals for people in need.

Our membership with Feeding America enables us to amplify our food and distribution efforts and bring in food from various retail and grocery stores, national food producers and distributors and growers locally, nationally and even internationally.
