Ein kemach, ein Torah — without sustenance (lit. flour), there is no wisdom.

These words from Pirkei Avot, the Jewish collection of ancestral wisdom, name a truth that every spiritual community knows: the teaching that nourishes our souls depends on the support that sustains it.

And the cycle completes itself across traditions. In Matthew 4:4, we hear: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." The Jewish teaching says: without bread, there can be no wisdom. The Christian teaching says: without wisdom, bread alone is not enough. Together, they describe a virtuous cycle — sustenance and wisdom, each giving rise to the other.

Yerusha exists to carry forward a living inheritance of earth-centered Jewish spirituality, deep ecumenism, matriarchal wisdom, and conscious aging. Our teachers, writers, and community builders create spaces where ancient wisdom meets the urgent questions of this moment. But that work doesn't happen on its own. It takes infrastructure, coordination, and resources — the flour that makes the wisdom possible.

This spring, we're counting the Omer together through seven weeks of original writing on our Substack, each piece exploring one of the seven sefirot/attributes on the Tree of Life. The journey begins at Passover and culminates in a tikkun leyl — an evening of immersive study and practice — for Shavuot and Pentecost, led by Steve Klaper and Brother Al Mascia.
