The Micheaux Film Festival was built to create space for voices that are often overlooked. What started as a platform to showcase independent filmmakers has grown into a community that brings together storytellers, audiences, and industry professionals around a shared belief that stories matter and access should not be limited.

Through the festival, we have seen firsthand how much talent exists. We have also seen how difficult it is for many creatives to turn that talent into a sustainable career. The gap is not ability. The gap is access.

That reality is what led to the development of the Oscar Micheaux Institute.

Named in honor of pioneering filmmaker Oscar Micheaux, one of the first independent filmmakers to build outside of the traditional studio system, the Institute is grounded in the same spirit of independence, resilience, and opportunity. Micheaux created his own path at a time when none existed, and in doing so, opened the door for generations of storytellers to follow.

Today, that door still exists, but it is not always easy to walk through.

The Oscar Micheaux Institute is being developed to help close that gap by focusing on three core pillars: talent, knowledge, and access.

Talent is everywhere. There are individuals with the ability, creativity, and vision to tell meaningful stories.

Knowledge is what helps shape that talent into skill. Understanding the craft, the business, and the pathways within the industry is essential to growth.

Access is what turns potential into opportunity. Without access to networks, mentorship, and real-world experience, many talented individuals are left on the outside looking in.

The Institute is designed to bring these three elements together. Through workforce training, mentorship, and career pipeline programs, we aim to connect emerging storytellers with real opportunities across film, television, and media.
