James Steg's Story
I am fundraising for HIV services to make up for what I was unable to provide for my patients with AIDS while a resident 1982-1985: Effective treatment for HIV/AIDS. The first effective treatment was approved by FDA in 1987. This was also a valuable lesson going into Internal Medicine practice: As a physician you can always make a difference by caring even when you can’t cure.
I practiced medicine for 40 years before retiring in June 2022. This will be my 3rd Miami to Key West fundraiser G_d willing. Now IF patients receive HIV therapy they can be cured, and this ride helps fund therapy and many social services which allow those with HIV to live fuller lives. The Joy Ride is a 2-day cycling event across Florida that raises funds for five Florida-based non-profit agencies ensuring vital resources reach those in need. Whether it's supporting housing, healthcare services, the LGBTQ+ community, mental health services, or HIV prevention, treatment, and care, every mile cycled will make a meaningful difference in peoples’ lives across the state of Florida.
As a fully supported event, The Joy Ride takes care of route planning, overnight lodging, meals, first aid, and other logistics – leaving you free to focus on the adventure! To join this incredible event as a cyclist, participants must raise a minimum of $1,200.00. Crew members are not required to fundraise, but we encourage you to set your own goals and go for it. 100% of your fundraising efforts directly benefit the five benefitting agencies.
