In THE SHOWER, a woman’s grief turns a baby shower into a test of motherhood, worth, and survival…because the one and only guest may never get to leave.

SYNOPSIS

Reeling from the grief of multiple miscarriages, Denise (40s, Black) hosts a baby shower in her home with only one guest: Amy (40s, Black), who is five months pregnant. At first, the afternoon feels awkward but harmless, as Denise leads Amy through a carefully planned itinerary of games, gifts, and party favors. But small cracks in Denise’s practiced smile, and the less than vibrant room, give way to something darker: an unraveling fueled by sorrow, envy, and a desperate need to reclaim her sense of motherhood by any means necessary. Trapped inside Denise’s home, Amy must navigate a twisted maze of grief and obsession while trying not to become the guest who never gets to leave.

WHY THIS PROJECT? & WHY NOW?

A 2021 study found that miscarriage rates among Black women (collected internationally), are over 40% as compared to white women. Factors such as stress, age, and lack of access to care were among the contributing factors. Yet the overwhelming media image of pregnancy loss often centers white women. Through the lens of a troubled and forgotten Black woman, THE SHOWER explores the psychological impact of reproductive loss and grief when it's left to fester in isolation. With reproductive access being stripped and limited across the country, the film also highlights the absurd social scrutiny that strips pregnant women of their personhood in favor of maternal ideation.
