I started Boyle Heights Cats as a TNR effort focused in the neighborhoods of Boyle Heights and East LA. The goal is to make spay/neuter services are free and accessible to all community members who care for community cats.

TNR

Since 2021, over 730 cats have been fixed at local clinics such as Fix Nation, Spay4LA and Stray Paws Animal Haven. While spay/neuter are covered by the LA City Cat Plan, the costs for extra medical support to treat community cats including $25 for convenia shots per cat or additional veterinary services like dental surgeries or amputations add significantly to the cost of doing TNR. In addition, there are other costs associated with trapping including gas, trap, food, and materials purchases including covers for our personal cars which are used to transport cats to the vet.

Rescue

When I'm out trapping every week, I often come across friendly cats and kittens that are just too friendly to leave in the streets. Most of the vetting costs (microchips, combo, vaccines, dewormer, deflea etc) that help get a kitty adoption friendly come from out of pocket and are never recovered.

Below is a general breakdown of the costs associated with vetting a cat for adoption:

Spay/Neuter: $0-$125 (+misc fees)

Vaccines: $15 FVCRP (need to be given 3 x if they are kittens)

Rabies Vaccine: $10

Combo Test: $25

Microchip: $16

Dewormer: $5

Flea Meds: $5

This does not include the costs of food, litter, playpens, and other materials which are purchased to make sure the cat is health.

Total for 1 cat: approximately $75-125

Total # of cats in fosters: 30
