Hi, I'm Adam Larson and this Fall, I will be hiking and biking the entire length of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail with a ShelterBox on my back in an effort to raise crucial funding and awareness for the organization's work to support families devastated by conflict and disaster. My initial goal is to raise $11,400; that's $100 for each mile of the 114-mile trail. Thank you for your support - every gift has the power to make a difference!

I first learned about ShelterBox back in 2020 when Bill Tobin spoke to my rotary club (Reno, Midtown). In 2022, I had the pleasure of hearing Kerri Murray speak about ShelterBox in-person at a Rotary conference. During her presentation, she mentioned the ShelterBox Adventurer program, and I've been brainstorming ever since! One day, as I drove from Reno toward Truckee it hit me: the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail.

The Tahoe-Pyramid Trail (TPT) is based on a vision for a trail that would follow the entire length of the Truckee River, from its source at forested Lake Tahoe to the desert terminus of Pyramid Lake. The current route can be traveled by foot or by bicycle, and descends around 2000 feet over 114-miles. The TPT uses a combination of existing dirt and paved roads, bike paths, historic roads, and new sections of trail and connecting bridges; however, there is more work to be done to complete the trail. Sections between Sparks and Wadsworth require more work to obtain easements for the trail. My plan is to bike that section on I-80, as it is currently the only legal way to complete the entire trail.

ADAM'S UPDATE:

The ShelterBox and I made it up the Truckee River from Pyramid to Tahoe on October 21st and 22nd! The weather was good, I finished healthy, and the fall colors were amazing!

I started Saturday morning at Pyramid Lake on foot about 6:30 a.m., then biked from Wadsworth to Verdi until about 6:30 p.m.

Sunday morning, I left Verdi on foot at 7 a.m. and then biked from Glenshire to Tahoe, finishing at 3 p.m. with my family waiting for me at Commons Beach in Tahoe City. It was a bit chilly out, but I still had to jump in the lake to make it official.

Training Update:

On Friday, September 1st, I participated in the Dusk to Dawn race on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The goal of the race was to complete as many 2-mile loops as possible from sunset on Friday until sunrise on Saturday (approximately 11 hours). I completed 21 laps for a total of 42 miles! All of the race participants pushed through gale-force winds (literally) and occasional sideways rain overnight, and maintained surprisingly good attitudes throughout! This was my first big effort wearing the ShelterBox, and I had to opportunity to explain the mission of ShelterBox at least 50 times throughout the race. I also feel good about my fitness level coming into the TPT challenge around 6 weeks out. Thank you to everyone for all the support! --Adam
