Tree CPR exists because people matter just as much as trees do.

Founded by Kayla Stuart, Tree CPR grew out of her personal journey; one that began in nursing and led, unexpectedly, into forestry. At its heart, Tree CPR is an intentionally designed workforce program that equips people from all walks of life with the skills, confidence, and connections needed to build careers caring for our natural environment. Through hands-on training, education, and mentorship, participants don’t just learn about trees, they learn how their work strengthens neighborhoods, cools homes, supports food systems, manages stormwater, and creates healthier communities for generations to come.

Care means reconnecting people with nature while advocating for the value of trees. We restore ecosystems and neighborhoods and empower communities with the tools to sustain their urban forests—ensuring social, environmental, and economic benefits endure.

Preserve means understanding how trees impact our daily lives. From the air we breathe to the rainwater we drink, preservation starts with knowledge. When people understand trees, they protect them.

Regenerate & Repurpose means planning for the future; both for the plants rooted in our neighborhoods and for the people who will care for them. Succession isn’t just ecological; it’s human.

From Vision to Impact

In 2023, Tree CPR launched its pilot workforce development program in Memphis, funded through a Tree Equity Workforce Network (TEWN) grant from American Forests and The Works, Inc. Kayla designed a full-time, nine-week curriculum that blended technical forestry skills with personal and professional growth. Twelve local participants completed the program, proving that when access meets opportunity, transformation for individuals, communities, and the urban forest itself will follow.

Carrying Forward a Shared Legacy

Tree CPR’s impact has grown even deeper through the legacy of Dr. Cyd Elizabeth Hamilton, a beloved friend, industry colleague, and founder of Better Nature Solutions. Following Dr. Hamilton’s passing, the work of her nonprofit merged with Tree CPR. This union honors her vision, strengthens our shared mission, and expands Tree CPR's ability to make a difference.

Today, Tree CPR continues to grow. We are rooted in care, strengthened by community, and driven by the belief that investing in people is how we protect our planet.
