We welcome Joy Reeves and MacEva Wright of the Rachel Carson Council

The Rachel Carson Council (RCC), founded in 1965, is the national environmental organization envisioned by Rachel Carson to carry on her work after her death. The Council promotes Carson’s ecological ethic that combines scientific concern for the environment and human health with a sense of wonder and reverence for all forms of life in order to build a more sustainable, just, and peaceful future.

Joy Reeves is the Director of Policy and Strategic Development at the Rachel Carson Council (RCC). With over 90 universities in the RCC Campus Network and a wide policy portfolio (which includes the RCC coasts and oceans campaign), Joy aims to bring a youth voice to advocacy spaces in DC and beyond. Joy received her Master’s degree in Environmental Management from Duke University, where she also earned her Bachelor’s degree. Her work has taken her to COP28 in Dubai, to the Galápagos islands with National Geographic’s Lindblad Expeditions, and to the coastlines of North Carolina to research saltwater intrusion. Trained in science communication as a Huang Fellow, Joy founded the Environmental Comics Classroom, and authored the book Growing Up in the Grassroots: Finding Unity in Climate Activism Across Generations, published in 2020. She was named a Udall Scholar in 2021 and hopes to continue a career in public service.

MacEva Wright is a recent graduate of Duke University, where she earned a Master of Environmental Management with concentrations in Coastal and Marine Systems (CaMS) and Community Engagement and Environmental Justice (CEEJ). Prior to Duke, she earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of North Georgia in 2022 and worked as both a long-term substitute teacher and a Rare Species Research Assistant at Grand Canyon National Park. These experiences sparked her passion for environmental stewardship, advocacy, and scientific literacy. In summer 2025, MacEva joined the Rachel Carson Council as both a Presidential Stanback Fellow and Presidential National Environmental Leadership Fellow. In these roles, she contributed to the RCC’s Ocean Observer, translating science and policy into accessible stories about the world’s oceans. Through her work in research, education, and advocacy, MacEva remains committed to advancing scientific literacy and environmental justice, and hopes to build a lasting career in environmental policy.
