Twin Cities Blind Sailing (TCBS) creates sailing opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals across Minnesota. Through accessible, hands‑on sailing programs, TCBS empowers people of all ages to build independence, confidence, and meaningful connections, both on and off the water.

Our Programs

In partnership with sailing organizations throughout the Twin Cities metro area, TCBS offers three core summer programs designed to meet sailors at every experience level, from first‑time participants to competitive racers.

Cruising (Flagship Program)

Held every other Saturday at the Minneapolis Sailing Center, this signature program introduces blind and low‑vision sailors to recreational sailing on Bde Maka Ska. Each session pairs one to three participants with a trained sighted guide aboard Ensign 23 sailboats. Sailors develop practical skills, learn navigation and boat handling, and experience the freedom and joy of cruising.

Racing

Offered weekly on Mondays in partnership with Wayzata Sailing, the Racing Program prepares sailors for competitive regattas. Crews sail Sonars and include three roles: helmsperson, crew, and sighted guide. The program emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and high‑performance sailing.

Solo Sailing

Hosted on Lake Harriet, the Solo Sailing Program offers a unique opportunity for complete independence on the water. Sailors independently rig and sail Mini Illusion boats—small, single‑handed vessels operated from a seated position within the hull, similar to a kayak. Sighted guides provide safety support from shore or by motorboat using radio communication, allowing sailors to experience true autonomy.

Special Events

Sail‑A‑Thon

TCBS’s signature annual fundraiser brings the community together at the Minneapolis Sailing Center. Teams compete to sail the greatest distance within five hours, raising critical funds and awareness to sustain and expand TCBS programs. Every mile sailed helps create more inclusive access to the water.

Duluth Sailing Trip

This annual two‑day adventure takes TCBS sailors to Duluth for an immersive experience on Lake Superior. In collaboration with the Duluth Superior Sailing Association and the Duluth Yacht Club, participants sail larger boats, navigate open water and rolling waves, and connect with the broader sailing community. The trip builds skills, confidence, and unforgettable memories.
