Why are we issuing this MAY DAY distress alert?

At the end of April, during one of our regular mobile clinics, The Mitzvah Fund's Ultrasound Unit suddenly quit working with no warning. The quality of care we are able to provide is unmatched due to our use of diagnostics like Ultrasound scans.

Having a working ultrasound unit is essential. SO... we took a deep breath and dipped into our limited Emergency Funds to immediately replace the Ultrasound Unit. We made this risky choice because...

A cat who needed dental care was sent to us by a trusted veterinarian. Although this cat seemed healthy, the vet suspected heart disease due to a new heart murmur. Without our ultrasound we wouldn’t have known that this cat wasn't a safe candidate for a dental with anesthesia. When we did the ultrasound exam, immediately we knew she had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition that is very hard to diagnose. Her case was very advanced but not visible on an xray and the murmur was not significant. The ultrasound saved this cat from having an anesthetic death and our team provided alternative care offering the cat's owner additional quality time with her senior kitty.

When our ultrasound died, there were pets we couldn't help immediately.

"Luke," a lovely little dog, had a lab test result that indicated he was at risk of heart disease. Without being able to confirm this with an ultrasound scan, we had to delay Luke's care. There were also two cats we couldn't care for without the diagnostic precision of the ultrasound that day. Many of our patients have not had regular veterinary care and are in immediate need of advanced diagnostics because of their long-time hidden conditions. Having to delay their care was super hard because they had already waited patiently for weeks to be seen. The Mitzvah Fund respects our clients' time and works diligently to find answers and resolutions quickly. Not having the ultrasound caused extended anxiety for our clients and delay in treatment of their beloved pets.

NOW, we need to quickly replace the Emergency Funds we used to purchase the new ultrasound unit before another emergency lands in our lap!
