The Unbreakable Organization supports individuals and communities who've been impacted by gun violence in the aftermath of tragedy.

The Unbreakable Organization first came together to read and discuss The Body Keeps the Score through an online Book Club in 2021. Through this experience, individuals from all over the world were able to come together to connect, read, discuss, and reflect on the book as well as their own personal journeys. Now, the organization is coming back for round two with the book, What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question.

Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Here, Winfrey shares stories from her own past, understanding through experience the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma and adversity at a young age. In conversation throughout the book, she and Dr. Perry focus on understanding people, behavior, and ourselves. It’s a subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and it’s one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our future―opening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way.

Our Impact

This Book Club is an opportunity for individuals to come together who are looking to dive deeper into this topic and have these meaningful conversations within a safe space. The funds raised through this Book Club will go directly into our scholarship fund, supporting students that have been impacted by gun violence. This scholarship is being formally announced with applications in early 2023 for current High School and College students. Since 2019, The Unbreakable Organization has donated over $8,000 in scholarship to first generation college students--your donation allows us to continue this initiative.

Book Club Details

The Book Club will meet for three sessions: November 21st, December 1st, and December 15th at 7:00 PM EST for 45 minutes via Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed out to those who register. We will be reading up to chapter 3 (page 68) before our first session and discussing that section as part of our introduction to the Book Club.
