Nearly 30,000 people found Blue Farm Directory in just a couple of weeks. That’s when I realized I needed to build it to last.

I built the original Blue Farm Directory in late 2025, when the Blue Farm idea first took off. At the time, people wanted to support these farms, but actually finding one near you was surprisingly difficult. I work in web design, UX, and marketing, and the problem seemed obvious: people did not need another list of names. They needed a map they could actually search and use.

So I built one, paid for it myself, and kept it running. For months, almost nobody came. Eventually, I made what felt like a completely reasonable decision and shut it down rather than keep paying for something people were not using.

Then this August, people started looking again.

Thousands of people arrived at a directory I had taken offline, so I rebuilt it in three days. Since August 25, nearly 30,000 people have visited Blue Farm Directory, and new people are still finding it every day. Farms are signing up, people are finding them, and those searches are already turning into real business.

One farm recently told me they normally receive only six to eight inquiries through their website in an entire year. In the two weeks since joining Blue Farm Directory, they received 20.

That renewed interest is happening at a moment when a lot of people are looking for more direct ways to support American farmers. Ranchers and farm groups have been pushing back on recent federal beef-import decisions they say could put additional pressure on domestic producers, even as the U.S. cattle herd remains historically low.

People want a meaningful way to support farmers. Blue Farm Directory gives them one: find a farm, buy direct, stay connected. The demand is already here. Now we need to make sure the directory is too.

This is bigger than one viral moment

Blue Farm Directory started because of a particular moment, but the reason I believe it matters now goes much further than that.

There are fewer farms in America than there have been in generations. USDA estimates that the United States had about 1.865 million farms in 2025. Between 2012 and 2022 alone, the country lost more than 200,000 farms, with declines across every revenue category below $1 million.

The cattle numbers tell another part of the story. USDA described the U.S. cattle herd at the beginning of 2025 as the smallest since 1951, and the herd contracted again in 2026.

There is no single reason for any of this, and not every farmer is facing the same circumstances. But the larger direction matters: fewer farms, continued consolidation, volatile markets, rising costs, extreme weather, and a food system under real pressure.

Most of us experience those problems farther downstream, when something gets more expensive, harder to find, or suddenly unavailable. Farmers feel them much earlier.

One of the smartest things we can do now is build more resilience into the way we feed ourselves and our communities. Grow some of your own food if you can. Learn what is produced near you. Know where your local farms are. And when you are able, buy directly from farmers.

We do not have to wait for the next shortage, price spike, drought, or disruption to figure out who grows our food. We can build those relationships now.

Buying direct matters

For small and midsize farms, selling directly to customers can make a real difference. It gives farmers an opportunity to keep more of the retail value of what they produce rather than receiving only one piece of a much longer supply chain.

It gives the rest of us something valuable too: the ability to know where our food came from and who produced it. You can ask how an animal was raised, what a farm grows, where meat is processed, when their season starts, or when the next beef pickup or CSA signup opens.

You stop being an anonymous customer at the end of a long supply chain and start having a relationship with the person at the beginning of it.

That kind of connection cannot replace the entire food system, and not everyone has equal access to it. But every strong relationship between a farmer and the people around them gives that farm another customer and gives that community another source of food.

This is what the map is actually for

The farm I mentioned earlier is The Home Farm in Harvard, Illinois.

Karen Kruckenberg wrote to me after people began finding them through Blue Farm Directory:

“I have been brought to tears at how many people are reaching out, and how mutually supportive these interactions have been. As my husband said, it begins to restore your faith in humanity. There were people who pulled into the yard today because they saw us in your directory. They purchased beef, visited for almost an hour, and we feel like we have made new friends.”

That is the point of Blue Farm Directory.

A person finds a farm they did not know existed. They drive out, buy food directly from the people who produced it, and maybe come back next month. They follow the farm. They tell somebody else. Over time, a search on a map becomes a relationship between a farmer and a customer.

The viral moment may be temporary. That relationship does not have to be.

And we have barely started

There are nearly 1.9 million farms in the United States. Blue Farm Directory represents only a tiny fraction of them.

I would never assume which of those farmers would choose to identify themselves as Blue Farms. That choice belongs entirely to the farmer. But there are clearly many thousands of farms we have never reached and huge parts of the country where the directory can become much stronger.

With the right support, I believe Blue Farm Directory could grow to include thousands of participating farms over the next year or two.

Every new farm makes the map more useful. One farm in an area gives someone an option. Ten gives them choices. Enough farms across enough communities turns a directory into something people can actually depend on.

Why I believe this can work

I did not build Blue Farm Directory simply to collect names on a map.

My background is in web design, UX, and marketing, so I built it around what people are actually trying to do when they arrive: find a farm near them, find what they sell, and figure out how to buy from them.

The map is only the beginning. The next phase is helping people get to know individual farms better, understand what they produce, follow them, and keep buying from them after the moment that first brought them here has passed.

The goal is not traffic. The goal is getting somebody from a search to a farm.

And now we know that is already happening.

Why I am asking for help

Blue Farm Directory is built and run by Lit Marketing, my web and marketing business. I built it, I maintain it, and I have funded it from the business since the beginning.

I am not asking people to fund something I was unwilling to invest in myself. I am asking for help getting it through the stage between proof that people want it and a sustainable resource that can support itself.

Blue Farm Directory has a plan for long-term sustainability, but sustainability requires adoption first. We need enough farms participating, enough people using the directory, and enough value being created on both sides for that model to work.

That is what this campaign is for.

Your support gives Blue Farm Directory the runway to stay online, reach more farms, improve what is already here, and keep growing while that long-term foundation is built.

I do not think Blue Farm Directory needs to become a giant organization.

I think it needs to reach critical mass and become dependable.
