One hour of rest can change a mother's whole week.

Black mothers are rarely given the privilege of rest. Black women are often portrayed as able to do it all, and that portrayal keeps mothers going on little sleep, with healing bodies and full hearts, while their own needs go unseen.

The golden hour
Picture one hour with a trusted doula in the home. The doula makes sure the mother is eating and resting, takes tasks off her plate, and follows her lead. If she wants the doula to hold the baby while she rests, she has that option. Either way, she has a moment to breathe and to say out loud what is on her mind. That hour gives her nervous system room to reset and can change how the whole week feels.

Why it matters
Maternal mental health challenges are common, and with support they can be resolved. Yet Black women are diagnosed with depression and anxiety during pregnancy at higher rates and receive treatment at some of the lowest rates.

Catching pink flags early
Red flags are the crisis moments everyone recognizes. Pink flags come first: early signs that are easy to explain away as stress or lack of sleep. Doulas are in the home week after week, so they notice what a short medical visit can miss, and pink flags caught early can help prevent the red flags.

Building the village
Becoming a mother is one of the most transformative times in a woman's life, and every mother deserves a trusted person to connect with through it. A doula becomes that person: someone who already knows her, which makes it easier to speak up when something seems off. Each golden hour you fund places a trusted, fairly paid doula in a mother's home and builds the village around her.

Rewriting the narrative
The idea that Black women can do it all has kept rest out of reach. Matrescence exists to rewrite the narrative of Black motherhood from surviving in isolation to thriving in the ecosystem of community. Matrescence supports Black women and families from preconception through postpartum and beyond.

Our 30-day goal: Raise $1,000 by 10/18/2026 to fund 20 golden hours of doula support for Black mothers in the Denver metro area. After we reach 20, every additional $50 is another golden hour.
