Across the country, immigrant families are living through fear, uncertainty, and exhaustion. Parents are afraid to leave their homes. Workers are being targeted while simply trying to provide for their families. Community members are navigating an increasingly complicated immigration system while access to trusted legal support remains limited and underfunded.

At the same time, immigration attorneys and nonprofit legal organizations are overwhelmed with demand. The need for culturally rooted, community based support has never been greater.

The SF Latino Task Force is building a Department of Justice Accreditation program (in collaboration with ODL) to help meet this moment. This effort will train and support trusted community members, including retired teachers, advocates, and multilingual leaders, to assist with affirmative immigration legal work such as applications, document preparation, translations, and case support. By expanding community based immigration support, attorneys can dedicate more time to court hearings, urgent legal defense, and complex cases while families receive the guidance and care they deserve.

Funds raised help remove financial barriers for future participants by supporting required trainings, educational materials, supervision, certification related costs, and other expenses necessary to prepare trusted community advocates to support immigrant families.

Born out of necessity during the pandemic, the SF Latino Task Force has become one of San Francisco’s strongest community driven networks supporting immigrant families through food access, health services, workforce support, emergency response, organizing, and immigrant advocacy. This next step is about building long term protection and infrastructure for our communities.
